'07 TL Type-s 235 vs 245

Will be pulling the trigger on my 3rd set of tires for my 07 Type-S. Regrettably, the 2nd set were the Goodyear Eagle GT and boy oh boy what a mistake they were - noisy and horrible ride!

So I'm about to get the Potenza RE960 Pole Position ($100 Rebate!). My decision was primarily based on getting a low noise and good ride quality tire due to my current driving style. Unfortunaetly, the Pilot Sport A/S Plus is on national back-order and read some favorable reviews on here.

I've read on here the Potenza has a narrow tread so my question is should I go for the 245 on a stock 17" Type-S rim or stick w/ the OEM sized P235? The tire place has already cautioned me on the wider P245 so I need some assurance from forum members whether I should do this.

Thanks,

Hannaman

I would say Why Not? I went with the 245/40/17 but many members say that 245/45/17 is the ideal size if you are trying to increase the width of the tire. Why is the tire place cautioning you? It is an 8" rim. My. Wait for more reply's to determine the best decision.

245/45-17 is the way to go and will cause no problems with the 8" OE rim, but, you're not going to like this, I wouldn't have a Bridgestone tire on a car.

Just as an example, the following UHP A/S tires in 235/45-17 are wider than the Bridgestone 245/45-17, which come in at a measly 8.2" in width:
Pirelli, Yokohama, GoodYear, Dunlop, Hankook, Sumitomo, Kuhmo, and although Michelin doesn't post tread width, I'd say it also is wider than the BS.

Just think how a 245/45-17 would look on you car if it were something other than the 960.

I have the Yokohama S4 in 245/45-17 that come in at 8.
7" and the othe other Yoko available, W4s is 9.2". The Yoko's are great, but they flat spot after sitting in the cold. The Michelin show as available on the Tire Rack site, so I wouldn't compromise, get the Michelin.

I have run both the Pilot Sport A/S (Non Plus) and currently have the RE960AS. Yes, the RE960AS is narrower, as the Pilot Sport A/S look more aggressive. However, I haven't really noticed any handling degredation when I switched from the Pilot SPort A/S to the RE960AS. (On my G Coupe anyways, that's the car that I had the Pilot Sport A/S on before swithing to RE960AS). I was still able to toss my car in the same curves at the same speed.

With that being said, I'm replacing the R960AS on my TL with a set of the Pilot Sport A/S Plus, just because I want to try those out. And don't sweat the 245. According to Bridgestone, the minimum rim width for an RE960AS in a 245 is 8", so you're fine... And FWIW, I'm getting the Pilot Sport A/S Plus in a 245. I can tell you the RE960AS is light years ahead of the MXM4 even in a 235, in every category...

I ended up going with the Michelin Pilot A/S Plus and not only is it a nice looking tire but so far wow oh wow! I feel like I have that brand new OEM feel back.

Thanks for your insistence Turbo! I'm glad I listed to you....

I'm about to got on a 900 mile round-trip next week and can't wait!

Thanks all
