'04 TL - Tire Replacement

I have an '04TL which is about due for a tire replacement - do not want OEM and prefer a harder better wear tire. Any recommendations and/or experience with types? In the past saw some recs. for Michelin Pilot Sport R/S and Pirelli Pzero Nero M/S.

Thanks in advance.

Pzero Nero's. I used them on my last car (Millenia S) & will be changing over to them when the treads on my TL get low. Very pleased with the performance in both dry & wet conditions. They are also substancially less expensive then the Michelin's. Got mine off of Tirerack.

After ditching the lame EL42's, I got Falken 512's. Great traction/stuck like glue. Fell apart after only around 17-20k miles if I recall correctly. They wore down like they were made out of butter. They also got a lot noisier as time went on. I replaced those with PZero Neros. Great tire. They didn't stick quite as good as the Falkens, but were quieter and have lasted almost twice as long. I'm looking for new tires now... I may go with another set of PZero Neros unless I find something else I think may be better.

The Michelin HX MXM4's my dealer put on my '04 have transformed my car into brand new. I've fallen in love with it again. These are the third set of tires I've had on it and without exaggeration, it's quieter and riding better than it ever has. The 3rd gen TL's will tell you in great detail exactly what your tires are doing, so you need to be very careful in tire selection. If you're looking for grip above all else, the MXM4's will not be the best bet. After a year with the growly warbly Avon M550's, I was looking for quiet and smooth ride above anything else, and the dealer's recommendation was spot-on.

Whatever you do, have it aligned by someone competent with the right specs as soon as you get the tires on. I live in Michigan so I wasn't even looking at tires that weren't all season.

The newest Consumer Reports rates the HX MXM4's #1 in their comparison category. I'm not sure why they're rated so poorly at Tire Rack, but the highly rated Avon M550's I had on it were like tractor tires in comparison. The Michelins were not inexpensive, as the total installed and aligned at the dealer was around $1200, but I've learned that you honestly do get what you pay for in tires. Go ahead and buy cheap tires if you want, but I'm sold on the Michelins. Expensive and worth it.

RE750's. Tiny bit louder on the road but they are lasting a lot longer and have great wet road traction. I'm happy with them

This is the tire I just bought from Tire Rack and right now they're on sale for $99/ea. That was too good a deal to pass up.
