Z1 ATF change over to Redline D4?

Hi AZiners!

Quick question, I've searched but couldn't find any definitive guide on this: when I'm changing from the OEM Z1 fluid to Redline D4 should I do it all at once a la 3x3 or do 1x3 a 3 times in short say 6 month intervals?

A bit of background, I've owned my 04 TL since 42K miles and did a full 3x3 of Z1 at 67K, then did a 1x3 Z1 at 105K and now at 113K, the transmission is doing the annoying 3rd gear stutter at light throttle many folks talked about. Basically on low incline and light throttle, the transmission will stutter and feels like it doesn't want to lock on and pick a gear.

I've done the 3rd/4th gear pressure switches already but it didn't fix the problem so ATF change seems next. Since I just changed it at 105K, with Z1 because DW1 wasn't out yet, I'm thinking it might be just that Z1 is a crappy oil and that's why Honda went to a different DW1 formulation. Of course I've read all the positive things about Redline D4 so figure I'll just change over to that.

Any thoughts/guidance is very much appreciated!

lol you didnt search...

well if I had to do it again, I would probably do a 1x3 every 5K miles (oil change) until you have done a 3x3 and then 1x3 every 15K miles to keep some fresh fluid in the transmission....

Now I drive on an average 20K miles a year....if you do more of a 6-8K miles a year, I would suggest a 1x3 every 1000 miles until you have a 3x3 and then a 1x3 every 15K miles....

either way, search a little bit more for more expert advice from the real knowledgeable people on the forum...I am nothing but a lurker

I had it done over a several hundred mile period IIRC. Made a huge difference mixed with their race fluid. Clean and smoother shifting. We also installed a stronger magnet on the drain plug.

Brand for magnet drain plug? any fitment issues?

I am due for another 1x3 ATF at my local Honda/Acura Indie shop for DW-1. This is my last 1x3 to have a full 3x3 of DW-1 fluid.

After than I plan to just switch to D4 only. I dont want to bother with mixture % of D4 and Type F racing fluid.
