Whistling Sound '07 TL-S

When accelerating at low speeds with the radio off you can hear a faint whistling noise coming from the front right side of the car. It sounds like wind blowing through something. Not that big of a deal, but I think it may be my power steering pump going out. Anyone know/hear of this issue?

does it come:

1> all the time --> intake leak
or
2> only at low rpm --> if you have CAI then this is normal (~2K rpm you will hear a whistle)
or
3> only when the car is cold --> PS pump, but if you did the recall recently the replace the o-ring and you should be good !!!

Thanks a lot for showing me that video, but that sounds nothing like the sound my car is making. Radio off, dead silence idling..ok? Hit the gas going really slow..there is a distinct WHISTLING coming from the front right side of the car. But thanks anyway for the help!

Also had the same problem. Check the Intermediate shaft
heat shield.

Here's a link to the service bulletin. It was happening to to me around 2000 to 2500 rpms and eventually turned into a chattering noise. The parts cost around 50 bucks from acuraOEMparts.com.

Hey guys, figured out what it was. When I was talking on handsfreelink it was the sound of the engine coming through the speakers. Is this normal?

No, it is not normal-- there should not be any feedback.

BTW, where is your phone located when you hear the feedback?
My phone generates feedback from the HFL while activated if the phone is in a center console compartment below the radio stack.
However, that feedback disappears when I'm talking while the phone is in a cupholder, a side pocket or in the armrest compartments.

Yes, when ever I am in the car my cell phone goes on the charger and its usually resting on the cover for the cup holders. That would explain it. But I only notice it at very low speeds from 1-5 mph when I hit the gas. Its not that big of a deal I can deal with it though. As long as its not a bigger problem than that I can deal with it.

I just noticed a very similar sound, as you described it, yesterday. Faint, high-piched wistle or chirp, only at low speeds. Was just referencing TSBs as I am approaching the end of the warranty, and think it might be TSB 08-031 "Chirp from Timing Belt Area".
Confirm if that is it?

Mine is doing the same thing, through all gears. I have like 2-3 months left on my PowerTrain warranty, too.

Just noticed it this morning. It happens only when accelerating, and seems to be at low RPMs, as when the RPMs go up, I stop hearing it, but that could also be due to road noise.

It doesn't seem to do it when the car is not moving.

06 TL w/ 5AT, 25K miles, no history of fucking up, and the engine etc are ALL stock

Ideas?

easy way to figure it out
drive like you usually do and put it in Neutral
then put iback and Drive

If the sound goes away then comes back, it's the tranny

big issue with the tl/tsx
they will replace the tranny under warranty if you push them hard enough
they wouldn't do shit for me as my warranty was up
even after i send acura client services a book of people complaining of this very issue. They say it's not common, but i disagree

Hey guys,

So I've noticed this whistling sound on my 06 TL base as well. I can only hear it when starting from stop in the 1.5-2k RPM range. Definitely coming from the trans and not the engine.

It sounds exactly like the video someone posted above. I have no idea if this is normal or not. I read that it could be the heatshield but it doesn't make any rattling sounds just a low whistle like wind is passing through it.

Does anyone know if this is something that NEEDS to be fixed? WHen i have the radio on I don't even notice it.

Btw I have done the pressure switch changes and 1 x 3 with DW1 trans fluid so far. I just bought the car last month.

I have the exact same sound when revving hard between 2500 RPM all the way up. It's especially pronounced when revving up hill/the engine us under load. And its unmistakable.

It hasn't affected performance in anyway, but its annoying and get rather piercing when revving hard. Any ideas?

Some of you guys are describing something that sounds very similar to what I just had diagnosed.

Try tightening the bolts that hold the metal plate on top of the engine itself. When I took mine off to paint it the whistling sound was extremely loud. Also make sure none of the bolts themselves are missing.

I have the same thing...whining, whirring sound, but it's been this way for a long time. Is this something we need to worry about right now or it's just something that's an annoying sound but not detrimental to the car?

I've had this sort of sound since 88k miles, I'm at 145k now. Car still shifts and drives like new...but who knows with Acura trannies. I have an 06 with the supposedly fixed transmission

From what my transmission specialist says it is caused by the input shaft bearing spinning in the housing. It's like when Acura made the trannys they did a terrible job of pressing those bearings in so they eventually come loose and cause the noise. I don't think it's really anything to worry about since you can't do anything anyways. Eventually the lack of support from that bearing going bad will cause another problem but it costs the same to repair if your tranny totally craps out on you or if you have it pulled and the bearing replaced now so you might as well wait.
