Whine on start ups - UR or S Belt???

I'm having a little problem. I get this odd ended whining noise upon some what "colder" start ups; over night garage sitting. After the car warms up a bit and drives, the sound just disappears. Could it have to do with the belt or the UR Crank pulley? It isn't high pitched (does that X the engine belt?), and it gets lower in pitch for example if you put the car in reverse. It's "medium" pitch. Almost close to the sound of a S/C, although I've only heard clips. Help? Could it be the belt? WWWHHIIINNNEEEE!

Thanks
Eric

My car recently started doing the same thing.. Im interested to see what this can be. I try explaining it to people and the best way I can is by what you just said. It sounds like a supercharger winding up.. It only when its cold also that it makes this sound.

Is the noise ampliefied when you turn the steering wheel but then goes away once the car is warm? If so, I had the same problem. The power steering pump needs to be changed.

i think we are having two different noises here, both on cold start ups...one seems to be the belt area which on mine was the crank pulley....others have a whine which seems to be the powersteering pump....

one noise is a squeak, the other is a whine....
