I have been noticing a lot since I got my TL. Whats the deal with the gas milage. It freaking sucks ass!! I mean I can put a full tank of gas today and by maybe tomorrow night its like past halfway getting close to a quarter tank. Sometimes it might last like three days.


I use the high octane gas and I even just replaced my air filter, I put fuel system cleaner in it and still about the same.

Does anyone have this same problem? I live in Houston, TX and theres nothing but city driving around here, you know stop and go traffic. I use to have an 03 Acura TL-S and that car used less gas.

 

what mpg are you getting? look at your trip computer and let us know.

 

yeah, thats odd man, unless u travel quite a bit and driving habits, it may use up that much.

for me, i get about 320 miles on a full tank using 94 octane. and thats mostley city driving.

 

I know what you mean. I live in LA and work downtown. I get about 16-18 MPG. A full tank of city driving only gets me about 230 miles. When I'm on the freeway though, I get about 29-30 MPG. It's all the stop and go traffic that kills me...and it's a manual.

 

It really depends on your driving condition.

Like previous poster said, hwy = close to upper 20's, stop/go traffic = 20-23.

I get anywhere from 270-320 depending on weekly traffic conditions.

 

all-city driving in tucson, az 23mph average 23mpg average
75mph highway driving 37mpg average
90mph highway driving 26mpg average

yea...my mileage is no where near that good for city driving or highway...does it get better after the engine gets broken in (car is only 2 weeks old)...?

 

I personally saw improvements after the first oil change. But nothing to die for.. to be honest.

I'm running complete stock, no added modifications if that helps. Oh i added LED's so cool factors gives me 2mpg more.

 

I'm getting about 20 mpg on mines.

Hello all, I just found this site to inquire about this exact problem. I JUST purchased a 2004 TL on saturday and I've only driven 61 miles, yet the gas gauge is just above the half tank mark, what on earth is going on? At first I was thinking maybe the dealership just skimped on that free fill up, but the gauge was noting "full" so I'm guessing that is doubtful.

I only drive about 6 miles back and forth to work each day total, but still it seems awfully ridiculous to only get 60-80 miles on a half a tank.

Also, I noticed that someone mentioned a mpg reading on the trip meter? I don't see anything like that in the display.

Anyways, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

 

Whenever I fill up next time Im going to reset my mpg computer and see how much Im getting out of my tank. Yeah I find it kind of strange that my car uses up gas that quick. My old TL-S wouldnt do that and It had about 78,000 miles on it already.

 

For you folks that drive very short distances, did your previous cars get worse gas mileage than EPA city?

 

I get 14-16mpg city driving, and 24-29 highway. I normally get around 270 miles on a tank of gas. So I fill up once a week.

 

The multifunction display has a 'trip computer' mode. Press the 'select' button once you see 'trip computer'. When the trip computer information is displayed, pressing < or > will display miles to empty (at least on my 06). People have posted there is about 2 gallons left when the display reads 0 miles to empty.

 

My trip computer showing 20 mpg, average. Most of my miles local driving. Kinda sucks, anyway!

 

Thanks so much. Does this work on 04's? I'll check today what it says. I hope nothing is wrong with the car I just bought haha. I'm thinking maybe they skimped on the gas at the dealership. It will have to wait til I fill up this weekend before I can get a fresh check.

Also, if the dealership put 87 in, do I have to dry the tank before I add in 91 or does it not matter?

 

Stealership probably put 87 in there, that's why your mileage sucks. I'd wait until the MID shows a "0 miles" range before I filled up again with 91.

Also, just for everyone's information, I get 23mph in tucson stop-and-go traffic, BUT for the most part, I drive like a granny. Relatively slow acceleration 9 times out of 10, and I always coast up to a red lights from pretty far away (racing to the red light like a banshee won't get you through it any faster - I always laugh at people who do that. you're just wasting gas). I also maintain a pretty large separation between me and the vehicle in front of me. I use that distance to "absorb" speed variations of the traffic in front of me, so I never use my brakes but still get to my destination in the same amount of time. Someone else I work with who owns a TL gets 16mpg in Tucson. You just have to be smart about how you drive and you too can easily get 23mpg in horrible city traffic

 

I'm in Tucson too; my wife and I work at the same place; when I drive it gets 26 mpg.
Last week I was out of town, so she drove it (the same route) and got 22 mpg.
Go figure.
It'll run fine on either 87 or 91.
When I first got mine, I compared the mileage using 87,89, or 91. It turned out I got a little extra mileage with the 91, but the higher cost made it just about a wash.

 

True, but the engine will run smoother on 91. And if its a "wash" you might as well put in what Acura suggests

 

I get about 300-320 on a full tank of 93 octane doing city driving. I will be taking a trip in a few weeks so I'll see how it does on the highway with the cruise on.

 

Not to mention...our compression ratios are pretty high for spark-ignition engines (11:1 or 10.5:1...I forget) so it is highly recommended (and almost necessary) to run higher octane fuel so that the fuel does not prematurely detonate at ignition (fuel igniting before the flame front as opposed to it igniting at the flame front) or before ignition. Its cuz of this it runs smoother, and as lembowski stated, if its a wash, might as well put in 91 --hahaha..i love the banana icon! Peanut butter jelly time!

 

I'm going on a trip this weekend so I'll get a better gauge. So I should run the tank dry before filling up? Damn, I just wanted to go top it off before leaving. Oh well.

I found the trip computer and it's reading as 15 miles per gallon but that is based off of only a 15 minute city drive. It also says 164 miles to empty and I've only driven 68 miles on this tank so all and all that is pretty damn bad gas mileage all around. Bleh.

 

I switched to driving the way Desert_TL drives after trading my Evo for the TL, and I get decent MPG city (21-24). overall i try to drive smooth, and use the brakes as few times as possible. so far its worked for me, and i cant complain.

 

hmmm I get 25 hwy/20 city and its a daily driver but i never use any fuel less then 94 I change my oil every 2500 mi clean my air filter every 6000 and clean plugs every 5000 new NGK plugs every 10000 ,And i only have a lead on weekends

 

I'm getting 23 MPG according to the computer, mostly highway miles on a 2007 TL-S automatic.

EPA estimates of gas mileage are notoriously overstated on all cars. This is because the EPA testing requires by law that manufactures test under certain conditions which are not typical of everyday driving. This is such a problem with all cars and manufacturers that supposedly starting next year the testing will be changed to simulate real everyday driving. It is likely that most cars gas mileage estimates will drop significantly including the 2008 TL.

 

My computer claims I got 32 mpg on a highway trip I just took and that I have 396 miles to empty, which is obviously BS since I have just over half a tank. The computer is not very accurate.

 

when i first bought my car back in january, a full tank would show a range of 280, but after city driving i would only get like 250. now after 3 months when i fill up it shows a range of 327, but i'm still only averaging like 285 city driving

 

I run the 91.
I'm pretty sure our TLs have a knock sensor that retards the timing when it senses knocking. So running lower octane won't hurt it; you just won't get all the performance.

Anybody else not have 91 near them? I'm in the DC area and we only have 87, 89, and 93 so I've been putting in the 93, but I was just wondering if any other parts of the country are like this right now?

 

I've experimented with half tank of 93 then half tank of 89, mixed... Not sure if there are drawbacks but I haven't noticed any so far.

 

Here in Pennsylvania we also don't have 91 at most gas stations. I just use 93.

 

I'm averaging about 21 MPG on a 2006 AT using 91. The www.fueleconomy.gov is a great site for getting information from other drivers. You can check out this link to see what others are getting for the 2006:

My best mileage was 31 MPG averaging 70mph while the worst was 17 averaging 25mph

 

wtf?? damn, i'm getting about 16-18 mpg in the city (driving around the Rutgers area). It suuuuucks! I dont understand how some of you are getting 20 mpg in the city.

I don't drive aggresively, nor do i do a lot of hard accelerations/braking. I'm shifting around 2.7k - 3k rpms. tires are properly inflated....any tips?
maybe i should change my CAI filter...

 

me too, truly hoping that either the dealer didn't fill it up...or they put 87...or engine needs to brake in. Just a wonderful car (red and tan interior and man smells good too...), but hoping that the gas milage won't ruin what it's otherwise the best ride I ever had...

Out of curiosity, I did a few quick calculations. So lets figure gas prices are $2.70/gal for 91, $2.60/gal for 89 and $2.50/gal for 87 (current prices here). And lets figure mileage at 23 for 91, 22 for 89 and 21 for 87 (several have said "slightly less mileage on lower octane"). On a 15 gal tank that gives you the following...

91 = $40.50 to fill up and 345 miles on the tank = $0.1174/mile
89 = $39.00 to fill up and 330 miles on the tank = $0.1182/mile
87 = $37.50 to fill up and 315 miles on the tank = $0.1190/mile

So it's not a wash... it's actually more expensive to run 87... and you'll get better performance on 91 to boot!

 

Yeah, no 91 around Raleigh. I run Shell V-Power only which is rated at 93 here.

 

Great post! This is the same thing Consumer Reports found in their recent study. Bottom line, run the manufacturer recommended octane -- not higher or lower -- for best results all around.
