How many times did the dealer change the ATF?

Since you did all your work there, maybe they will goodwill it for you.

Just because you take it to the dealer it doesn't mean anything, their transmission drain intervals are way too long. However like stated above, because you did bring it to a dealer try to argue with them that your a loyal customer and always bring it in for service to see if they can hook you up with a new tranny or discount. What were the symptoms, can you describe exactly what happend with details?

OP, that sucks dude....I would say lack of maintenance....you took it to the dealer but if you never paid them for "tranny flush" they never did it and it means your car was riding stock Z1 fluid for 150K miles....

I am in an 05 with 150K miles and my tranny is solid as rock :knocks on wood:

Even if you did knock on wood it's bad luck to say your tranny is rock solid

Hey swoosh, is there way to check that? Do you just check for transmission fluid? Because i got it changed awhile ago, but when I went for an oil change at different shop (Sears auto) they recommended transmission fluid to be flushed... i hate it when that happens they put doubt in my mind (TL is my first car so I'm like always lost when it comes to mechanical issues). However, I'm very keen and punctual when it comes to maintaining my baby!

Please let me know will be appreciated!

Sears will charge you for it but not do anything to your transmission....there was a scam with Jiffy Lube couple years back regarding the same....

I barely takes 10-15 minute and I recommend it doing it yourself....

Signs:
1> Color of fluid : Pink-ish
2> Smell: No burnt smell at any point....

check for smell and color and you will see if you have to get it changed....

By doing it yourself, you will see the job is done and its done right plus save yourself some $$$

My '05 tranny went out with 215k on it. I did a fair amount of research and even though I did all the scheduled maintenance I was told that I was pretty lucky to get that many miles out of it. The transmission shop I went to said that heat builds up because of some of the smaller passage ways in the earlier models so they went ahead and modified mine to help with the cooling and so far, so good. This has been the only problem I've had and the TL still has a very low cost of ownership.

^^^ Inaccurate will love to hear that from you (heat killed my tranny)......

I do feel sorry you had to shell out that much cash to get it fixed....

But the following thread helps with the heat issue and I recommend everyone to do it....

^^^ Swoosh how did you know heat killed your tranny? I'm thinking about getting a tranny cooler now, do you have one? I asked IHC and he said that the tranny cooler isn't as necesary when I asked him. I think he said a good quality synthetic fluid is the key. Awaiting response so I can order a tranny cooler! Yet I'm too lazy to take off the bumper to do it, or do it in general. lol

So i guessed the heat made the fluid break down and hence hurting the tranny....I will make another guess that he was on stock fluid Z1 ?

I recently did a 4x3 with redline and am waiting before I install this as you loose 1-2 qts for fluid in the process....but yeah this is next thing on my list

No thread jacking but +1 on the heat killing the tranny. Heat is causing my tranny to shift like shit the pass 2 weeks. Happens after driving around for an hour or 2. Drives like new first 30 minutes. Just today it dies on me. VSA and engine light, 2000rpm limit 3rd gear limit etc.

It drives fine now and lights dont come on as long as i don't WOT when the car is hot. When the tranny is cool I can WOT. @ 128k miles

I think those are signs of your tranny on its way out....

I would switch to redline type F if you havent switched yet....also the switches + tranny cooler....

I hope the damage is not already done...

The sad thing is that I bought the car @ 67k. Did the pressure switches and changed the tranny oil every 10k miles. At 114k it died on me; it would drive for a few minutes and it won't change gears and eventually wont go into gear. No lights came up. had the tranny rebuilt with a refurbished torque converter. Its acting up again and its only been 15k. Now at 128k. I think I'll try the cooler.

I'm going to whine a little more. I just shelled out $3000 because the timing belt snapped and I did the timing belt change at 90k. Also more money cuz new 19" rims, new power slot rotors and pads. Even bought both supercomputer pedals and door sills. Replaced all motor mounts and rack and pinion and new tires. Everything is less than 10k miles old except tranny. Grrrrr Just really bad luck.

^^^ that is some bad luck bro....

I hope you get everything figured out....some cars just are money sucking whores....and some cars are your best dream....I hope it switches around for you and if it doesnt, I would suggest selling the car (I know its tough to do that and hence I have never suggest that)....

No Ive had the Tranny flush before. Although its a 2005 I put some heavey miles on this car. Working in DC and driving back every weekend to the Hampton Roads area has put 150,000 + miles on my baby. I do drive hard and aggresive. Anyway I was told its common in these cars when those kind of miles are put on.

UPDATE UPDATE:

Took the TL to HAll Acura last Saturday. They called me on Tuesday with the damage. 4,560!!! Tranny is gone. He told me the car is otherwise in great freakin shape! (Gee thanks) Soooo, I had to give them a 1,000 to start work the wife has the loaner and Im driving her 2010 4G. Car should be ready this Saturday, tranny will come with a warranty for 3 years! I seriously thought about buying a new car. I think if a TypeS would have been around I would have. Oh well!!!

So for everyone make sure you check out your Tansmission, if not it may cost you a pretty penny!

I think Jon's TL had +220k when he sold it.. flawless for the most part. I'm sure the new owner is still running strong.
