tranny takes a few seconds to engage
my 04 auto with 76k miles still has very smooth shifts and i have never had a problem with the tranny before. only once or twice driving at 40mph, i pressed the gas hard enough to downshift to 2nd and the car hesitated to catch the gear. but lately, when shifting from park to drive, or park to reverse or reverse to drive, it takes about 3 seconds for the car to catch the gear and start moving. i have the acura extended warrenty to 100k miles or until 2010. is this an early warning sign of a tranny problem?

YES in many cases- the signals you are getting are warning signs= Proceed immedialty to the dealer- and be glad you got that warranty!!!

Have you had the tranny flushed or serviced as required by the dealer? If you have then you are in the clear. They can give you a hard time if the trans has never had a service done to it. There is a filter on most auto trans that need to be replaced. I am not sure if thats true with the Acura.

The acura does not have a conventional trans filter where you drop the pan and change it with the fluid.
The TL has a well known problem with weak oiling to the 2nd and 3rd gear cluctches, that causes them to fail anywhere after 40k miles.
Gen 2 cars got a COURT ORDERED extension to 7yrs 9 months or 109k miles, and they often ~goodwill~ replace units not in the limits or specific VIN range (late 03s)- so from 99 thru late 03 is covered on that. The problem was not fixed- is not fixed-
cannot actually BE fixed within the confines of space in the trans.
You dont get hasseled about fluid change as acura does not call for it until 60k miles
Now they are saying to start earlier than that,- but members who did it every 15k still have a failure at 60- go figure~ while others may never change it and go 150
Just take it in and say: its shifts funny and has a long delay locking into gear. Its been getting worse. I have the extended acura policy....
and somewhere beteen 15 minutes and a day later you are driving a new loaner car for a week, no charge for anything!!!

Dont waste your money on more fluid- it wont fix anything- ask anyone who tried
Did they do a full fluid change at 50k, or just 3 qts?
The symptoms you describe are warning of failure- the dealer is your new best friend !
Ask them why they didnt notice its shift delay when it was in last time!!
MEET the Service MANAGER, and your car gets better care
Service Writers are there to bs you, and the techs dont know who has the extended warranty.
Techs like cars with that warranty- it MUST need several new parts... for which they get paid to install!
