To those with integrated side moldings behind the wheels / aka rock and mud guards

I just realized this weekend when washing my car that these things have pockets that can accumulate TONS of debris. Mine had a great deal of accumulated dirt in it along with some leaves and pine straw. It seemed that this was just a plastic pocket but I would be nervous about letting matter decay there because it might start rust...

Maybe everyone already knew this but for me it was eye opening as I wash my vehicle every weekend and have never seen this before.

Yes, ive noticed that as well. Thats why i make it a point to hose it down everytime i wash the car and the wheel wells. I dont know why they would be designed that way.

they are designed to help catch stones so the car behind you doesn't kick up the rocks and so on. As far as starting rust, the pockets have a hole for water to drain out and I highly doubt it would start rust or cause something to decay. I usually hose mine out too with water and get most of the rocks and stuff.
