Sunroof won't tilt or auto open/close. Have to hold button to close/open fully.
Ever since I got the car, the one thing that bothers me is that my sunroof tilt feature doesn't work. I know your supposed to press the button in upwards (towards the roof of the car / skyward). I can feel the button press in but the sunroof has never tilt open...
Also when I pull the button to open the sunroof, I pull it past the click for auto-open but it never auto opens. I have to hold the button for the full ~5 second duration to fully open the sunroof. the same when having to close it.
The 1-touch open/close feature doesn't work.
But the sunroof opens and closes just fine. Just the Auto and tilt features don't work.
What can it be?
I have a DMM to use to test, but I just don't know where and what wires to test for what

Try this first...sometimes they mess up when batteries go dead.
Moonroof motor calibration
NOTE: The moonroof calibration must be performed when any of the following events have occurred.
Moonroof motor calibration
NOTE: The moonroof calibration must be performed when any of the following events have occurred.
- The moonroof is manually moved with the battery dead or disconnected.
- The moonroof motor is replaced with a new one.
- Any component related to the moonroof replaced.
- Wind deflector
- Moonroof glass
- Moonroof seal
- Moonroof glass bracket
- Moonroof cables, etc.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Open the moonroof to full open position and release the open button.
- Pull and hold the moonroof OPEN switch until the moonroof glass moves slightly back to its mechanical stop and then forward again slightly.
- New Motor
- Other than new motor: This will take about 13 seconds.
- Release the OPEN switch.
- Within 5 seconds, pull and hold the moonroof OPEN switch again.
- In about 3 seconds the moonroof glass will begin to slide closed.
- Continue to hold the open button until the glass moves to closed position, tilts up, and returns to the closed position again.
- Test the moonroof auto operation.

Honestly I read over the instructions and thought to myself "i doubt this is going to work. The glass is going to move slightly back and than forward again? that doesn't sound right"
I went out to the car, turned the key to the "II" position. Pulled the sunroof button back to the first click (not the 2nd click. The 2nd click is for auto-open feature). Sunroof opened fully. Held the button after it fully opened waiting for something to happen while seriously doubting anything would happen.
About 10-15 seconds after holding the button while it was already open, the sunroof MOVED just like you said! I was like "oh shit this might actually work...."
Than after it moved I let the button go, and immediately 1 second later I pulled the sunroof switch to the 1st open click again (not the 2nd auto-open click) and held it... 3 seconds later the sunroof moves to the closing position EVEN THOUGH IM HOLDING IT THE BUTTON TOWARDS THE OPEN position! I definitely knew it was working!
As soon as the moonroof slid to the close position it TILTED UPWARDS!!!
When I saw that, I was so filled with joy!!!!!! I purchased this car Jan 2011 and since purchase I have NEVER seen or been able to get the sunroof to TILT or auto-open.
THANKS TO YOU, IT WORKS!!!!!
Something so little like this really made my week man. I always thought that I wasn't ever going to be able to get it to work myself and would just have to live with it (Driving on the highway at 60+ mph and having to hold the sunroof button for 5+ seconds to fully open and close is VERY irritating).
thanks thanks thanks thanks

Those instructions deserve to be put up somewhere important.... It's a problem that very few people will ever witness (I'm the only one on the forum that i've read that has had this problem) but definitely works!
Just curious, how did you get those instructions man? Is it a universal thing for most cars with sunroofs? Or do you work for Acura/Honda or something? I tried searching for answers through google for weeks at a time and never got anywhere..

Different issue: Press open to 2nd click: Nothing. Press and old OPEN to first click and the moonroof opens but in aprox 2" gaps, pauses, opens another 2" pauses, opens 2"...etc. Same with closing in the reverse order only it WILL NOT close all the way. Have not replaced anything releated to the moonroof. ???

Mine won't close after doing the first step...holding for 13 seconds
Hi I have the 2005 acura tl. I tried to reset the sunroof like it says on the thread, but after the 13 seconds holding the buttons while it's open, there's no movement at all. Now I can't even close my sunroof. Please help... I tried so many times and nothing seems to work.
Thank you

Just brilliant
Thank you so much to the person that posted the reset procedure. It happened twice to my RL. The first time the dealer charged me $$$ to fix the switch. The second time my battery died and this problem seems to be related to battery issues. I was ready to go back to the dealer when I found this thread. It worked like a charm!

Moon Roof acting up
I have an 08 MDX that the "one touch" open/close feature that suddenly stopped working. I could open it and close it to a point by holding the button down. But it was hard to judge when to stop holding the button for it to properly close and not go to tilt mode. I found the following quote in an earlier post.

I am happy to report this worked for my problem and on the first try. Thank you for this post. Even though this was for an RL, it worked on my MDX.

I had the dash pad replaced at the Acura dealership and since the repair my sunroof will not work at all. What components should I check first and where are those located?
