Starter cranking gets progressively worse then self-heals?

Weird starter problem for the past few months. The starter cranking gets progressively weaker over a period of a couple weeks until it finally can't turn over at all. When it fails completely I turn off the ignition, wait 30 seconds, then when I try to start the car again it turns over and starts the car like it did when I bought it new?? Everything is fine for a few days and then cranking gets progressively worse again. The dealer checked it out and couldn't find a problem. Said cables were good. I changed the battery in case something was going on with one of the cells but that didn't help. Usually for a couple days before it fails it is difficult to turn over and start but its not until it fails completely does it self-heal. Very strange. Maybe I'll replace the starter even though the dealer said it's fine. 2006 TL w/ 170K

could be a failing starter or ignition switch

I think a diy starter replacement is next on the list. I'll let you know how it goes.
