Signs that power steering pump is going bad
 

05 6MT TL with 36k miles.

I've been hearing clicking noises when I turn so I believe that it is my cv joints, in which case I'll have the axle replaced.

Someone mentioned that it could also be from the power steering pump going bad.

I have no experience with ps pumps so if it were to go bad what would be the signs/sounds to look for?

i was told that our TL's have the worst designed steering pumps. mine is out and my mechanic is either waiting for someone to find him one or still searching for a used one. When i turn on the car for the first time after it cooling down it makes a whining noise. and when i turn the steering wheel it does it even louder. thats the steering pump. after a while of driving it goes away. but its annoying as hell.

fixed mine with 5 min seal change.

Sounds like a air leak on the suction line to me, not a bad pump.

if u r gettin a whine check out the O-Ring, that sealer goes out most of the time, and its just like $1 at the stealership

If you're hearing clicking on turns it's almost certainly a CV joint, I'm sorry to say, and that's a potentially catastrophic failure situation you shouldn't ignore. Failing power steering pumps whine and your steering wheel gets jerky when you make low speed turns. As mentioned in this thread, with our cars p/s whining is most often a simple O-ring that even the dealership doesn't charge much to fix.

Agreed Clicking sounds are almost always from the CV joint or joints going bad. You should replace the bad one(s) as soon as possible.

It's strange that the pump would go out. I had a jeep for ten years that i beat the crap out of for 250k and never had to change the pump. Granted when i finally sold it it sounded like a semi when it was turning but still wasn't bad.

2008 TL Steering Issue
 

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the community. I have 2008 TL which i am happy with so far except my steering wheel is so heavy usually when i am parking. Sometimes, it is impossible to turn the wheel. I have checked the power steering fluid, and it is full. It has only 63000 miles and this is not normal.

Anyone else has this issue or any suggesstions?

Um isnt there a bulletin for power steering for 04-08 TL's the high pressure power steering hose leaking?

I have had to have this repaired on two different occasions during my warranty period. Hopefully it doesn't happen again

There is a recall for the power steering hose. Just make sure the dealer replaces the O-ring and seals. I have 50k miles on my 06 TL and the dealer originally quoted me $600 to replace the pump. I wasn't too happy and didn't think the pump could be bad after only 50k, I went home and started searching on here and saw the recall discussed. I went back and spoke to someone else and they said I had an extended warranty til 52k and they ended up replacing the pump for nothing! I plan on keeping my car for a long time and I'm wondering if the pump will fail in another 50k?? Anyone been through 2 PS pumps already?

About the CV Joints..... I hear clicking when I turn, but its only when I FIRST start the car when it's cold. After the first 1-2 turns, I never hear it again.

Is this still a CV joint issue?

Clicking when it's cold (< 10F) = hardened CV joint grease. If the clicking goes away when it's warm then there should be nothing to worry about. If the car is warmed up and driven several miles or if you hear the noise when the temps are moderate (> 40F) then it's probably a bad CV joint. A quick determination is full lock turns lurch forward & reverse at low speeds. If you hear it clicking.. get it replaced.

Whine when it's cold (< 60F) = Air leak in the PS Pump. You can make a quick determination by removing the cap from the PS res while the car is on and checking if small bubbles are surfacing. Make sure your car had the PS recall done before doing the DIY fix. If you replace the o-ring yourself, make sure the replacement o-ring is ORANGE.

I replaced the o-ring...didn't fix the whine. Oh well.

This is what I'm getting. It's -6F right now. Hopefully it's because of the cold.

I also get the clicking sound from the cv joint only when it's cold. After a few turns the noise stops. It only does it on the driver side which leads me to believe this is not normal even under cold conditions. I'm thinking that the joint is just starting to go bad and that is why it only does it in the cold unless someone before me possibly resealed the boot and didn't put enough grease back in the joint. Ant comments are appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it dmac, wait til it warms up.. if it starts to click all the time when you make a turn, then you should concern yourself about replacing it.

Ya know, having owned a Honda for the previous 12 years and 200k+ miles, I've only heard clicking once and the CV joint has been replaced.

Never had I heard of this issue with hardened grease. Well, let's hope it is since my right side has been clicking a bit in the morning. Sigh.

Wished I had done the same of searching answers here first before letting dealer changed my PS pump that they said was leaking. What I got suspicious is whether dealer fried my pump when replacing the PS hose per recall? Or this is just a really crappy pump? Now my PS rack is leaking and the left boot is wet although no leak onto the ground yet. Anyone has thoughts to share? Much appreciate it.

They ended up changing up a new pump and I had to pay for it. I think I was definitely ripped off.

Would that whining sound come when accelerating only? It doesn’t make that sound when I turn the wheel at all. I have this whining noise when I accelerate
