Thumbs down RIDDLE: What sounds like a flat tire...but is not a flat tire?

A few days ago a hit a massive pothole...well, 2 not 1, like I originally thought, result in a limp mode condition and the alignment WAYYYY out of whack. Now, a few days after the fact, we have a brand new problem. So once again, I ask AZine for some help in narrowing this new problem down.

SYMPTOMS: Sounds like a flat tire, but is not a flat tire! Low vibration, high noise at low speeds; moderate vibration, low noise at high speed. I THINK it's coming from the passenger side, opposite side the pothole incident

KNOWN

-Alignment is spot on
-Tires are properly pressurized

ROOT-CAUSES?

- Wheel bearing?
- Coilover failure?
- Bent Wheel?

Easy check.. lift the front end and see if there's play in the wheel by rocking it. Then visually inspect the inside of the wheel for damage. Final check.. check the wheel balance. Most national tire shops use hunter's road force to check.

While you're looking, check the tires themselves-- it could be a separated belt, damaged sidewall or damaged tread, which can cause the car to handle inconsistently at speed.

Up she goes this weekend, I'll check the bearing.

I am also going to try and find the flatest section of road and drive at varying speeds, I'm becoming increasing convinced it's either the wheel bearing or the coilover on the passenger side.

I'll stop back in shortly with the results of the first exam.

I was going to say excessive Toe wear causing a roof shingle type of feel on either the inner/outer edge of the tires but that takes quite a while to become as pronounced as you described.

My bet would be the massing bump you hit damaged a tire or tires as stated.

Best of luck fixing your issue.

Your wheels might be cracked. I had an 07 camry that did that and we took the tires apart to find out 3/4 rims had cracks in it.

Smile Similar Problem

I have a 2004 Chevy Venture Mini Van and it also sounds like the right front wheel is about to come off as well as making noise and vibrating. I had the wheel and hub bearing replaces, rotated the tire with the back tire and I replaced the tie rod. I am going to try the things you suggested here by lifting the car and shaking the tire to see if anything moves. In fact I'll go step by step to see if I get any results before I take it back to the shop and spend more money. Thanks for the good advice.

if there is a bubble in the tire would that be visible or would the bubble be inside? I'm trying to learn as much as I can about cars in order to start saving myself some money.

I just had the tie rob and hub bearings changed on both sides of the front. The car was making the noise and doing all the same things on both sides. My son and his girl friends father did the driver side, a shop did the passenger side and the passenger side is still making noise and acting the same. I'm going to follow your advice and check the tire the way you said to do. Also, I thought to put air in the tire because it looked lower than the rest, no matter how much air I put in the tire the tire barely moved. I didn't want the tire to blow so I stopped putting air in it. Hope the other things work. I also thought maybe I should try to replace the tire. I was hoping not to spend any more money at this point unless I had to. Thanks for the advice.

A bubble would be visible on the exterior of the tire.

Visual inspection-- check for a bulge or irregularity on the sidewall of the tire.

Tire problem of wheel bearing, as others have already pointed out. Pretty easy to diagnose. Any tire shop should diagnose for free.

My uncle's truck used to do that, one of the belts separated in the tire, sounded almost like a flat spot.

I did check and there is like a bulge at the bottom of the tire. I'm going to just buy another tire. Thanks. Hopefully this is what it is. I did lift the car and the wheel moved just a little bit. someone told me that it will have some movement in it. It barely moved but it did move.

I took it back to the shop and it seems the hub and bearings I bought were bad so they are going to replace them at no charge.

I was able to fix the problem with my tires, now I have another issue. I just replaced a busted radiator but my anti freeze seems to be vanishing without a trace. Every day when I went to check it, there was nothing in the radiator but the overflow was overflowing. To make matters worse, from out of no where while I was driving in taffic on the interstate, my car just shuts down. The battery light came on. I had to get a tow home. I replaced the battery with a new one but the engine won't turn over. It sounds strong but it just can't quite get there.

Sounds like a pressure/blockage issue. Was the replacement radiator new or refurb? OEM or aftermarket?

Cv axel & seal & bearing

I have a 2003 Ford F-150. The front differential has a cv axel on the drivers side that needed to be replaced along with the seal and bearing, and a small snap ring in the differential. It makes this noise when the clip has disentegrated and the seal and bearing are shot, damaging the cv axel. It sounds like it’s on the passenger side but it’s not. Hope this helps.
