oh crap, I forgot to take the towels out when I traded my in my TL. I guess the new owner now has some free dirty towels.

I bought mine 2 days ago, I test drove a few others so I figured it had to be something small and stupid like a loose clip, gonna try this as soon as I get home. Does anyone know how easy it is to take the whole rear deck off from inside the car? I have some Fatmat lying around, might as well throw a little bit in there around the sub.

Did this this morning. I just crammed some paper towels in the holes above the liner. I figure I'll use something a little less ghetto-rigged next time I have a chance, but this works for now. Defnitely stopped the rattle. Thanks for the DIY OP.

I had bought and installed iSimple for my TL a couple weeks back and noticed the consistent rattle in the rear deck. It was the most annoying thing ever not being able to raise the volume past 15. So, I looked up the forums, followed your steps and directions, and boom. Quite literally. I can now enjoy the bass to the max like never before. It really was easy, although pulling the plastic screws out can be a hassle. Nonetheless, thank you, fine sir!

It's funny u mentioned this because i used my old socks to do the same thing. I did this to my 08 Accord EX-L w/ Navi i owned before this car so I already knew what to do with this car. Its amazing what works on a budget. When i swap the full-range speakers, I'll dyna-mat the whole rear deck.

I did this and it helped a little but didn't eliminate it. A few weeks my last post I had it at the dealer and they said they would fix it for free since I just bought it, they ordered their foam kit for it and it made no difference. I've had the best luck stuffing a few scraps of towels between the window and the vent but once it plays for a bit I have to push them back down. I'm thinking I'm gonna tear it apart again myself and figure this out. Has anyone just removed the window vent? How ghetto does it look without it? If I'm gonna tear it apart I might try a new sub too to make sure it's not just the old one disintegrating. Kicker makes a free air 8" 2 ohm that handles 100w and is only like $50, can't be worse than stock.

I have always had to suffer and not turn the bass and subwoofer levels up. Found this, and figured I had 20 mins to spare... and it works great!!! The rattle is gone, the clips are the hardest part to remove but the rest is easy! Thank you OP

I don't think I hear my rattle as much as you guys, but I'm gonna have to try this out before I put everything back together. Currently have the rear seat and rear deck out for suspension install, so I will have to check this out from the opposite direction, instead of from the trunk. It seems with the rear deck off, I could possibly just put together a custom "mat" to separate the rear deck and chassis below.. Assuming I am understanding where the assumed rattle is coming from.. I will check it out when I get back to work on the TL in just a bit

I also found out the plastic cover for the child seat hook rattles
I stuffed that with some cloth and closed it and it no longer rattles.

Thunderr, how did you pad the subwoofer? I did this mod today and used black foam window strips. It certainly helped get rid of some rattle. I'd do anything to get rid of some of the sub distortion!

I still have a little bit of rattle it turns out. I'm now going to take something like a black shoelace and push it with a screwdriver between the window and deck, the whole width of the deck. That should do it hopefully.

And in summary...everything is rattling?
He explained that the rattling was the "baffles" releasing extra air from the heavy excursion of big bass songs.
I have a 07 TL, and i started having this sub. rattles two weeks ago, and i tried padding the hole around the rear vents area, and still have some other thing rattles, so i find out the other rattling from the right side seat belt holder(the mounting bracket). so i fixed that too and now is fine!!
Okay so i did this yeterday night took 15min to do, i broke 3 screws i ripped the truck cover thing off. And i put pieces of towel, by the vent area. And then some rattles went away. Then i went in the back seat and i heard alot of rattle coming from the red back light in the top of the ceiling of the car right, its right on top of the middle seat in back. And i pushed up on it, and the alot of rattling went away. But when u stuff it up in there, ppl see it clearly if thier behind u in traffic. U could try superglue. Or some kind of clear drip free glue. But now the sub rattles like hell. And the only way to fix that is get a better quality sub. This stock sub is no good. If i turn vol-7 it rattles so bad even with the bass down to a little more then half.
I believe the sub is not the problem. The problem is the plastic vents smacking the rear windshield. As for the purpose of the vents... could they be ports for the bass to *exhaust* it's sound?
I have 05 TL that I've had this problem for about a year. The dealer wanted to charge me $110.00 for labor just to look at it because my warranty had expired! I just removed the cover with no problems and didn't break any clips. I wedged something between the vents which seemed to help but I still had an awful rattle/vibration. After investigating further and the real point of my post is...My rattle was coming from the GPS antenna which sits next the subwoofer! The antenna can be easily accessed through a hole and when I would put my hand on the bottom of the antenna the rattle would stop. The only thing that I could think of doing was wedging a piece of cloth between the antenna and the frame. Everything sounds much better now!
FYI...just performed this fix on my 08. The rattle is actually coming from the rear vent vibrating against the metal deck underneath. Worked like a charm.I actually used some strips of 1/2" closed-cell foam that I had lying around from a sound proofing project several cars ago and it worked quite well. There's really nothing too it, I used fingers and a screw driver to wedge it in there.
Thanks for all the info guys - I actually used the advise and come to find out... its NOT the rear vents that are vibrating - its the seat belt mechanism that sits right next to the sub and supplies the seatbelt to the middle passenger... I apply pressure to it and it and the rattling stops.
I just fixed my rear deck rattle. It wasn't what the OP found. The noise I was hear was from the plastic door that cover the metal hook for the car seat in the center. I had some Crystal Method playing and pushed up on everything in the truck and it didn't stop. I went inside and pressed on the speaker itself, still no fix. I then opened the plastic door and it stopped! I stuck some weatherstripping in there and closed the door, ALL FIXED.

Fix for Bass Rattle
Put thin pieces of foam between the rear deck and window. Bass rattle gone except for extreme bass in a song. No problem with any rock song. If I crank up (over 25) on a rap song from a CD, may hear some distortion.
Bought my 2011 TL used with 60,000 miles. Heard some bass rattle but it helped me get a better price on the car. Read some of the advice from this web site, put the foam in, almost no bass rattle. Also the setting on the audio was full bass in the back....WTF? Got lucky the bass speakers do not appear to be blown. Love the car stereo....forgot how good CD's sound and the on board hard drive that records CD's is an amazing feature.

Hopefully somebody else can confirm, but from reading the original post, it sounds like you remove the part of the trunk liner that's underneath the rear deck. You then stuff some sort of insulation in between the upper deck cover (with the speaker grills) and the metal deck.
To remove that section of the trunk liner, it looks like there are just some plastic pop-its.
I'm going to be attempting this fix this weekend, or maybe one day after work this week if I'm feeling up to it.
Some people are saying they have a rattle from the seatbelt holder, which would require seat removal.

I started hearing the rattle about a week ago, only with a couple specific songs, with certain mid-bass.
I did the fix described in the original post here, but that didn't do anything.
I'm pretty sure I have a blown rear left speaker. I used fader/balance to isolate that speaker, and it sounded like ass. I guess it could be a broken clip or something right near the speaker, but it really sounds blown. Pressing down on the grill/rear deck surround doesn't quiet any of the noise.
Ordered a new OEM from eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/110823617533...84.m1497.l2649
I might pick up some Dynamat too, may as well do that while I'm in there. I'm hoping the speaker arrives by/on Saturday.

I can't edit my above post, sorry for the multiple posts.
It turns out that the source of my rattling was the back left speaker, but the speaker itself wasn't blown. The dust cap had separated from the cone, so it was just bouncing/buzzing/rattling around. I replaced with a new OEM speaker, and am back in action.
I followed that link that robowarrior posted to remove the rear deck cover and access the speaker. Speaker part number is 39120-SEP-A01, same for front and rear speakers.
The previous owner must have addressed some rattles, because there was already a bit of dynamat on the metal rear deck.

Glad you got it sorted out. I had the same issue in both my 04 TL and 08 TLS. Nothing worse (well that may be an exaggeration) than listening to your rear deck killing your music.
