Randomly stiff clutch on 05 MT TL; recommendations when replacing clutch?

Hello all,

My clutch on my 05 TL 6MT is starting to randomly get stiff when I depress it. It’s only happened a few times but I am concerned because I do not want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere when I am on a time crunch to get somewhere. The first time it happened, it was slightly more stiff than usual and then went back to normal after. It happened again the next day but within a couple miles, it happened again but more stiff (total of 3 times of stiffness; it was fine for the next 20 minutes of driving but I have not driven it since). I have not noticed any slipping or engine revving. Seeing as how my car is at 162k miles and it is the original clutch, I am going to get the clutch and flywheel replaced by my mechanic but wondering if there’s anything else I should be prepared for or replace while the clutch is being changed (preventative or otherwise knowing the only symptom I have mentioned)? I have already ordered the Luk clutch set and Luk flywheel from rock auto as well as the rear main seal oem based on other posts on the forum (and of course GMSFM/AC Delco MT fluid!). If you could mention parts and possibly part numbers, I’d appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

I bet a fluid switch will help immensely

Thank you, thoiboi. I actually just did a transmission fluid drain and fill over a month ago and have been doing so regularly. And thank you justnspace! I'll take it in and see what happens. I just wanted to be prepared is all.

Keep in mind the transmission drain/refill will not help the stiff clutch pedal.

There is no need to do this regularly on a MT. Put the good stuff in and in theory should be good for a while. Opinions will vary if "a while' is 20K or 80K miles. To note, I went I think 60-70K before I did it again. There was a noticeable difference in the smoothness of the shifts when done again.

The MT fluid barely needs to be changed unless you want to switch to the GMSMFM. You pedal issues are from the clutch master/slave cylinders or the pressure plate (most likely).

Thank you all. What I meant by regularly was that I change the MT fluid every 50-75k miles and just did it recently (I have been using GMSMFM since 40k miles). I guess I just assumed that I would switch it out again while already there but if you all are saying to just re-use the fluid since I just recently changed it, then I can do that as well. I will try to take a look at the master and slave cylinders and if needed, I'll ask my mechanic to change those out. Even if those look decent and there isn't any leaking, might you all still suggest changing them out if I change the clutch out? Looks like RockAuto's Luk products recommend them being changed out when a new clutch is put in. Thank you in advance.

No, i wouldn't touch the hydraulics unless you know for sure it's that. The replacement of the master and slave is completely extra time ontop of the clutch install so you can do it seperately. But deciding which to replace between the 2 will require you to investigate further.

LUK clutch kit from rockauto is the way to go here. Be sure to replace the flywheel at the same time, only about $200 more.
