Rack Seal Failure / Power Steering Failure
I have an 06-TL Auto (20K miles) and yesterday when I pulled out of the garage the car was making an odd "humming" sound. By the time I got to my son's school to drop him off (about 1 mile) the sound was getting louder.
I drove from there straight to the Acura dealer (about 7 miles) and by the time I pulled in to the service entrance bay a squealing sound was eminating from under the hood and it was worse when I turned the steering wheel. By that time I knew it was a problem with the power steering and that was the same comment from the service advisor.
Luckily they had a service loaner, 07 MDX. So I left the car and went on my way.
I got a call later and was told that a seal on the rack had failed resulting in loss of power steering fluid and that the lack of fluid had also fried the power steering pump. They are replacing the rack and pump under warranty. They have the parts in stock and indicated that they would work me in and should be done sometime today.
When I got home last night - sure enough - there is a large puddle of fresh reddish fluid on the floor under the passenger side of the engine compartment.
I know there was none Sunday as I swept out the garage Sunday afternoon.
When that seal on the rack went it blew the fluid out pretty fast.
I have owned six Acura / Honda products since 1990 and this is the first major mechanical failure of any kind I have experienced..... I don't know if I am lucky or unlucky!
One question - anything I should make sure that they do when the job is done?
Thank you,
Mike

Safety Car
glad you got it taken care of quickly... acura released a bulletin about the pump having problems.... but Ive had my share of rack n pump probs (im on my 4th set now.) the pump has a O-ring that needs to be replaced so make sure that they did that before you pick up your car even though its a new pump it may not have the updated ring.

new to the forums, not new to honda's. hi.
how was your p/s fluid red? hope it isn't some other brand as honda/acura uses a petrol based p/s fluid. this can hurt the p/s if its soome kind of atf type fluid.

Honda's PS hydraulic fluid is clear (very thin), and turns ligth brown with use.
Reddish? That's sounds like auto tranny fluid.
