Pre-cat Deletes, J-pipe and Test Pipe

First of all, I feel obligated to say this: that darn cat in the back is a PAIN IN THE ASS! It held up the entire project for an entire NIGHT...we had to come back the next day to undo the bolt that we thought was stripped . Anyways, I have a question: can someone tell me HOW they know if they have a leak? Can you hear it inside the cabin, or only with the windows down? I can't decipher between the "hissing" noises - air rushing through the pipes (sounds like more free-flow air; almost like a cai) or leak. Also, I've yet to reset my ecu after the cel came on...but I wonder, does the cel coming on have anything to do with a "growling" noise upon initial start up? It's very faint, but it's definitely there...I thought maybe it could be the system running the regular systems check on start ups?

Thanks,
Eric

OH, and a BIG thank you to Richie Wong. The welding on the pre-cats cracked; needless to say, Richie sent me a brand new set of pre-cats. Thank you Richie!

I haven't heard anything "hissing" other than the CAI after my install of the pre cats. But the deep growl on start up is definately there (which i like the sound of on my stock exhaust) and i think it is from the warm up effect of the factory cats and the extra fuel being sent through the cat deletes that causes the "growling" sound.

... no cels so far, so try resetting the ecu

you're kidding me! the only "hissing" noise you hear is from your cold air eh? dang...did you use sealant or anything of the sort? that could be the problem...I couldn't find any o2 safe gasket sealant, so we didn't use any. we just torqued everything to spec...

so there should be no sort of "cai"-esk sounds?

Permatex Ultra Copper sealant IS oxygen sensor safe and rated to 700 degrees.

I have used it for years on all exhaust sealing needs.

Used it on my precats/j-pipe/test pipe install and no problems or leaks at all.

just to confirm...you used the sealant and swiped it all over between the gasket and the actual pipes?

Yeah mine hiss too. I thought it was a leak but I checked it and rechecked it. Found no issues.

Yes put a little on both sides of the new gaskets.

It will seal and last until you remove it.

I race sprint cars and use it to seal the headers to an 820hp engine without a header gasket. The stuff works great.
