Power steering rack and pinion replacement

Hey guys, so my ps rack crapped out on me. Was driving on freeway and all the sudden I noticed steering get really heavy as if no ps. Pull over check reservoir, its empty. Late took the boot off and inspected, ps rack went bad. Had a minor leak for the last year, and all the sudden it completely failed, won't hold any fluid.

My questions is, for replacing the rack and pinion, do you HAVE to drop the subframe or can it be done without?? I see in the manual it says to drop it. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

I've yet to do mine, but from what I've read, you can just lower the rear a bit and it should have enough room to maneuver it out. Wish I could say for certain.

OP, look at replacing it with a TL-S rack.

What's the benefit? Does it fit all TL models?

P.S. Pump is also different.

Many years ago the wife's '93 Z24, she purchased new, needed another pump, so I replaced it with a non Z-24 pump. Completely different feel.

Now whether it will be the same for the TL, can't comment, but for some reason they have a different pump on the 3.5 TL-S.

Not trying to dump any more $ in this car than I have to, so I bought a ps rack and pinion from oreilly. Replaced it, works good (for now), but it has lifetime warranty so I'm ok with that. And the subframe had to be dropped a bit in order to get the old ps rack out and new one in.
