Oil leak help: oil pan gasket or rear main seal? (pics)

oil has been leaking slowly over the past few months. It hardly drips on the ground but has a lot on the underside of the car, especially the sub frame. My guess is either the oil pan or the rear main seal. what do you guys think it is? Im lowered and occasionally hit the bottom of the car on the ridiculously high and narrow breed of speed bumps, so that might be why the oil pan is leaking. I also Got my transmission rebuilt in January and that might be why the rear main seal is leaking, especially if they reused the seal. I have no prior experience with oil leaks. Im not sure what that dark plate is but i think thats where the leak is coming from. From the instructions provided by the "Garage" on here, it looks like that plate needs to be removed to redo the oil pan gasket. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...791768aa1e.jpg

cleaned off the oil yesterday and will post new pics as soon as I get a chance to get a idea of what needs to be done. From the info and the pics given, does anyone have an idea of what I need to fix this leak?

Just rechecked the bottom of the car and YES the oil is leaking from that plate and its the Torque converter cover. Not sure If i can remove it and look around there without draining the oil. heres a pic. So what should I do to fix this leak???

Your rear main seal is leaking.

have you tried replacing your PCV valve to see if that alleviates the issue?

flyromeo3 07-26-2016 11:16 AM

Ouch,... surprised the trans rebuilder didnt tell you about replacing the rear main seal while he was in there already.
but yep, this 10 dollar part is going to cost you 500+ just to replace.

That plate is just a cover for the torque converter.

Wow, your tranny folks didn't recommend replacing the rear main seal? Find a different place next time. As previously stated, it's a $10 part, but $900 labor to replace it.

On the good side, sometimes rear main seal leaks will stop just as suddenly as they started. I'd definitely replace the PCV valve, it's only ~$25 and 3 minutes of your time...

I just checked the PCV valave and it looks brand new. It blew through it like a whistle. The work they did is still under warranty. Think they would help me out?

At this point. It's a totally different work order.
The best I would picture a shop offering is a discount on labor.

let us know what they offer .

PCV replacement recommendation around 80k miles, its like $20 and 3 mins of your time. I highly doubt the transmission shop will offer anything help you replace the rear main seal since the rebuilt AT does not involve anything with the rear main seal (they could be nice enough ask to replace it for you but they are not responsible for the leak).

rear main seal i have it as well. it's a 600-1000 dollar fix based on where you go. most of it is labor since it's a pretty involved job. i just check my oil every few weeks and top it off. very common issue on the TL

took it to shop finally and they told me they could not find where it was leaking from. they said they split the tranny from the engine (me paraphrasing) and that the rear main seal was fine and its not what is leaking so IDK what else it can be

truonghthe 06-09-2017 07:44 AM

lol trust me me if it leak from your described above its rear main seal, I had to replaced my accord when I saw the leak at the exact spot except mine was worst than your. BTW how did they check the rear main seal? did they remove your AT housing and pressure plate? lmfao this is interesting.

There's nothing else there that can leak except the rear main seal.
