Odometer issue

I have an 07 Type S with ~176k miles on it. While I was buying my car about a month ago, I test drove it, and the odometer showed the correct mileage. The car was running fine, I was satisfied, and thus went ahead with the purchase. But shortly before the purchase, the sales rep that was working with me indicated that the car would have to be sold as a "not actual mileage" vehicle, because, in his words, he said: "After about 4-5 hours of driving the car, the odometer changes its mileage, so sometimes it shows its actual mileage, and sometimes it shows a different mileage". Since I have no plans on selling the car, it didn't bother me at the time. The only reason it bothers me now is when I take it in to the dealership, because the previous owner took very good care of it, and there are extensive service records on file with the correct mileage. So every time I take it in for service, I get a funny look.

Something must have happened between the previous owner no longer having the car (I can't say sell, because I can't find any trace of the previous owner selling the car, which is a bit strange), the dealer acquiring the car, me test driving it, and me taking it home. I initially thought "fraud!" but since they told me the actual mileage before this came up, and since I saw it with my own eyes, it can't be that.

So my question is: do I have a faulty odometer, or am I a victim of odometer rollback? Would it eventually cause any issues with any other part of the vehicle? Because if not, then it's not worth the trouble and cost of replacing it unless I want to sell in the future. Ideally, I'd like for it to be restored to its original mileage, but now the DMV has the faulty mileage attached to the VIN, so while my service dealer would be at ease (as well as myself), I'd run into trouble with the state. Comments?
