Not certain on the '04, but check this (if you want to double, double check that you have a problem):
In the MID go to the Trip Computer screen. You should see Avg MPG, Avg Speed, etc.
Use the V arrow on the steering wheel controls to go to "page 2". That should show
"Range" or "Miles to Empty" or something of the sort.
When "Range"/"Miles to Empty" is ~20-25-30 miles the low fuel indicator should come on.
If you've been through all that and still have the problem, sounds like a sensor issue. For me, that'd be a trip to the dealer.

Here is a way to test the guages and their lights
Hold trip/reset button
Turn headlights on
Turn ignition switch to ON
Within 5 seconds turn the headlights off, then on, then off
WIthin 5 seconds release the trip/reset button, then push it 3 times
all the lights should blink and the needles sweep.

No sure.
My "Low Fuel" light trips right about 25 miles Range/To Go. Give it a few miles just in case.
No worries about running out fuel - there is a 3 - 4 gal reserve. From the time the "Range" says "0", you still have ~3 gals and can drive 60 - 75 miles under normal circumstances.
