Sorry this is petty. Anyone know how many ounces would get my halfway? I'm filling through the dipstick hole because of ease, I figured that might contaminate the dipstick reading if I'm feeling that way, so I was hoping somebody would know.

around a half quart. and its fine filling it that way just give it a little time to drain down and you might have to dip and wipe a few times to get a good reading

Did you drain it or just trying to "top" it off?

Thanks Jdm!

i just recently did a drain and fill, I checked it a little after we did it, I drove around and let the radiator kick on before I checked it, but then today I drove on the freeway and then checked it and I saw it was at the low dot so I wanted to top it off.

If you did a drain and fill, you should have put 3 qts in
If you did, then there's nothing to worry about

I don't know how long it's been since the fluid has been changed at all. Just got the car a few months ago, the atf didn't look great, and more than 3 came out, more like 3.5qts

looking better after the first drain, waiting a few weeks to do another..

It doesn't make a difference
If you're particular about what comes out
Then refill to that amount

the dipstick is there for a reason, use it for what its meant for. simply adding exactly 3 quarts isnt the right way to do it.

The transmission is sealed. The sump is spec'd at 3.2 qts.
If you drain and fill, the difference of 3 qts vs 3.2 qts is insignificant.

You would need to be several quarts low for the transmission to inhibit any symptoms of low fluid.
I've drained and filled 3 quarts over 250k miles. It's a common practice.

The only time I'd recommend getting pedantic about the amount of fluid in the trans is a blown rear main seal.
That's why I asked OP if he had just done a drain and fill.

It's also stupid difficult to get an accurate level check with the trans dipstick.
As long as there's fluid on the stick, it's fine.

Good to know. It's the first nicer car we've owned, so I'm a bit neurotic about it, for better or for worse.

Oh congrats! It'll serve you well, especially being neurotic on maintenance.
