How often to refill your freon?

I brought the car to the dealer recently because my a/c is acting up (driver blows hot air and passenger blows cold air in cold weather). They said my freon is low (i think he said ~0.5lb) and they added a dye to see if there's any leak and I just got a call saying that there's no leak. I'm confused why my freon will be low when the system is an enclosed system. I have an 2007 TL with ~72000 miles. Is this normal?
I did have similar a/c problem around ~50000 miles and brought it in to the dealer and once they said it was fine and another time they said it was normal. Since I have extended warranty, I want to make sure there's nothing wrong and its not just the dealership trying to make temporary fix.

microscopic holes in the seals lets r134a out. no system is really leak free (it might take years to "leak").

Maybe once every ten years in my prior vehicles.

I haven't noticed a need to check the A/C on the TL or the 2004 Odyssey yet.

if one side blows hot and the other blows cold, it could be that your temperature door actuator is broken... This is the exact problem I had on my other car. The electric motor that opens/closes the driver temperature door was broken, so the driver side was always blowing warm air.

Never

In all my years of driving and cars I've owned, I've never had to recharge / replace freon.

It shouldn't leak unless there is a problem with the system or someone converted an old R12 system to the 134 where the hoses aren't sealed.

The hot one side, cold the other scenario is not related to the charge as there is a mechanical problem with the door activation system.

There is a way to pull the HVAC error codes manually:

Everything's working right now after the filled the freon and they said there's no leak in the system. I'll just have to see if the problem occurs again.

Stop! Take your car back immediately to the shop and have them purge the system completely and do a refill. The reason? Our cars do NOT use freon. They use R134a.

Get that freon out ASAP!

haha that's a terrible mistake if they did freon. I hope it's just the OP's misuse of the term.

I'm certain that they didn't use freon as that is probably around $1000 for a 30lb jug and most dealers wouldn't have freon as it's been long gone in vehicles since @ 1994.

I have 3, 30lb containers of the R-12 in the garage as 2 of the cars I have still have the factory R-12.
As I stated earlier, the addition of refrigerant into the existing system isn't going to change the hot/cold condition inside the cabin, and if it did it was purely coincidental.
