AT downshift = tranny problem?
I was getting on the interstate this afternoon and had to get on it a little, far from WOT.
Once I pass everyone and get off of it about a second later it downshifts jerking me a bit. I press the gas a little and it then shifts back.
It worries me a bit because the SC is not installed which I would figure it would cause more strain.
I just recently added (within a month or 2) UR pulley, CAI, ATLP Exhaust and TB spacer so could it be just getting used to it?
that is why I am asking the experts.

how many miles do you have on your car, and how hard do you drive it? Hondas/Acuras have a lot of problems with their AT's. Its because our motors are built to rev high, which is why I will always own a MT car.
Depending on how you drive it, and how many miles are on your tranny, it may be starting to fail. I know someone with a 04 TL who already had his tranny replaced.

Your statement is way to generalized to be true. Between my family and circle of close friends we've probably had 20 different Honda cars in as many years. Only one of them - a '91 Leged 5mt - had any transmission problems at all.
The TL is an isolated case that had a design flaw in its transmission. They do experience a higher failure rate than they should but the mode of that failure is due to an overheating problem in one of the clutch packs. It has more to do with the power output of the engine than the RPMs.
By and large, Honda drive trains are about as reliable as they come, save the TL 5at.

But to Bent09, i'm not sure why your tranny is acting up, the engine wasn't cold was it?

True that there are more "working" AT trannies than "non-working" AT trannies, but I think, when compared to companies such as Toyota and Nissan, Honda AT trannies are not in the same ballpark

This was almost the same feeling. It downshifted to about 3750K which I thought was high.
I did just have my oil changed and tires rotated but would not think there would be a connection.
Do I just diconnect the battery for 15 minutes to reset the ECU?

these TL's got some funky-ass transmissions.. my 08 5AT does some wierd shit on the occasion.. wont upshift in auto mode right away.... jerks upon shifting.. the grade-logic control bugs out in moderate traffic (taking your foot off and on the gas pedal at like 15-25mph) ....

for those who dont know- the secret ECU reset is the CLOCK backup fuse, in the passenger side foot area or side panel on passenger side
Then you dont have to reset the radio and nav security codes!!
You should have them written down in a few places- but if you disconnect the battery- and for a minute is fine to reset the ECU- then the radio locks down- if you leave cable off for a while- the nav locks down too.
Its a computer- yank the plug from the wall- and its going to do a self test and reboot~relearn process

The TL can be very upsetting at times. Lets hope its not a transmission failure which I highly doubt it is. The car is at 37k, it probably needs a little tune up.

I was going to ask if you happened to be going downhill or uphill when it happened but still, it should not hit nearly 4,000rpms without you being deep into the throttle.
What has your maintenance schedule been like? I would do the reset and also do a drain a refill and see what comes out and what's on the magnet. Apparently we have a filter that no one has known about until now too.
I remember reading in the million pages of the transmission failure thread that the reason it downshifts to second gear at freeway speeds is loss of hydraulic pressure due to a plugged screen from all the thrid gear debris. It may be getting partially plugged.

i've had this problem too; but it's intermittent and i've just given up on an explanation...
randomly it'll just downshift or upshift causing the ride to suddenly get very very uncomfortable and jerky.
i've chalked it up to the Drive by wire system and there just being a glitch in the programming.

My 05 Oddysey and 04 TL has some kind of glitch with trans as well. It only does it at very low speed going from 1st to 2nd gear. Feels like little jerk in gas pedal with little noise. Not sure if anyone else has same issue, but it seems to be an issue with Honda transmissions. I replaced trans on my 99 Oddysey with 70K miles on it and now these 2.
I'm getting sick of Honda transmissions to tell you the truth!
