I thought the recall replaced one of the high pressure lines going down to the rack. This is just the suction hose connected to the reservoir.

ross7778 11-21-2011 08:12 AM

Apparently it just needed to sit overnight. The noise was gone when I started it this morning.

blueechip 11-22-2011 03:15 PM

I have this problem currently on my 05 TL. I got the new o-ring in my possession. 80 cents. Plan on installing toNIGHT and hope for no whine in the morning. This thread seems to be a lifesaver for so many owners, I hope to be yet another successful user of this quick fix.

can you confirm the noise is gone for good?

Majofo 11-22-2011 05:44 PM

I did this roughly 2 years ago.. the whine has never returned.

guitarplayer16 11-22-2011 05:54 PM

Doing this tommorow (I don't think I even have the whine) haha

Thanks for the DIY!

Noise is gone! Thanks to this board I spent 80 cents to get rid of a nuisance I have expereinced every cold morning for a year.

av2600 11-27-2011 12:50 PM

well i changed it today... but it was already the orange oring... i repalced it with the new one anyways hopefully that will solve the problem but i'm not optimistic...

at this point i'm not even sure if its coming from the power steering.... the noise is exacrly what OP describes though... so i dont know.

guitarplayer16 11-27-2011 12:53 PM

ugh I couldn't fit my ratchet in there so I go to my wrench kit and I have all of the wrenches in their spaces but one missing and it's the 10mm one =(

That's probably because the 10 mm is the most common bolt on Hondas & Acuras, so you put it somewhere easy to get to, or easy to find, like the dash or glove compartment.
It'll take you a half hour to find the wrench and about a minute to change the O-ring. :chuckle:

Majofo 11-27-2011 04:51 PM

I have two full sets of sockets and a set of impact sockets.. yet have bought 6 additional 10mm sockets of varying neck length for this same reason.

:snicker:

Nukem 11-28-2011 03:53 AM

Just started hearing a wine at slow speeds when turning the wheel...glad I searched. Guess I will be making a trip to Honda to get this O-Ring.

m_wrx 11-30-2011 01:19 PM

i did this on my 04 tl, now my engine is super quite..great fix..thanks guys

jb879123 11-30-2011 07:49 PM

I had the whine and did this fix. Didn't really help. I sucked the reservoir dry and refilled. That helped for a bit but it came back and the fluid is very dirty again. Should I continue to flush?

guitarplayer16 12-03-2011 11:12 AM

I don't have the whine but I thought I'd buy the o-ring and change it anyway.

So I just changed mine and realized the old one was orange already and was still in really good condition.

I guess that's why they say "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

Means17TL 12-03-2011 12:46 PM

Has anyone here experienced this whine only when the car is in reverse??
I've been hearing it for the past week or so every time I am in reverse?

xpressobeans 12-03-2011 02:41 PM

450$ whine made ME whine

Ok, so my car normally sits nice n snug in the winter months starting November 1st and returning to play in April, but with the nice weather I have had it out a little longer. Started it up last week and GROAN MOAN AND WHINE that power steering was howling. I brought my car into the BloomingTon Acura and they attempted to replace the o-ring twice to no avail and my power steering pump was to blame. At 88xxx miles I guess I was somewhat shocked that the power steering pump was going out on such a spendy car. My winter car a 2000 nissan xterra has 180,000 and all original equipment including the manual transmission. Makes me somewhat nervous that the acura will hold up as well. Thoughts?

Probably your transmission. Could be fluid.. if not. :rip:

Sounds like they just raped your wallet.. stay away from that stealership. We have members with close to 300k on their 3rd gens. Just be diligent with maintenance and you'll be fine.

I'm glad I ran into this tread! My 06 TL has just started to make the noise. I'm going to get the o-ring today right after work, but one quick questions...

I've glanced through all the pages on this tread, but I don't see what the best way is to drain the PS fluid. Or do I need to drain it? If so how much, just the reservoir? I don't have any of the fancy PS draining gear... Any tips?

Thanks!

When I drained my reservoir, I finagled a shallow dish (called a ramiken) into the spot next to it against the frame rail. Then I pulled the reservoir up and moved over the tray. I then unplugged the suction hose and let the fluid spill into the dish. Once it was near full, I plugged the hose back in and dumped out the cup. I think I had to do that 2 or 3 times before I could just remove the reservoir and clean it out.

http://www.dishfactory.com/art/product/ramiken2.jpg

Once the reservoir was out, I plugged a long tube into the return hose and ran that to empty bottle (large 2-liter or better). Then I started the engine and turned the wheel back & forth till became impossible to turn at all. Have someone hold the hose and bottle because it fills up quite a bit and there is quite a bit of force pumping that fluid around.

Filling it back up requires you fill the reservoir, then start the engine and turn the wheel. Shut it down and do it again (reservoir will be low again). Repeat until the reservoir stays full.

swoosh 12-06-2011 01:02 PM

^^^ i just used a turkey baster to suck all the PS fluid....

Took the return hose and threw it in a bottle....and did the flush

crawling out of a parking spot, or backing up in the driveway without pressing the gas. I will try and replace the fluid this weekend.

anyone else have any other suggestions??

swoosh 12-06-2011 03:54 PM

^^^ I say open a new thread with a video of the sound....you will not get much help on a tranny issue in a PS thread... :2cents:

Majofo 12-06-2011 04:01 PM

no need.. Majofo is here. :O

I am an expert on Trannys :bitelip:

You do not need to drain your fluid, and when you do this repair, you lose very little fluid. I didn't even add any back to mine after completing the repair. (didn't have any....)

honda_nut 12-11-2011 01:15 PM

damn, i love this forum. my steering is making some strange noises during cold mornings which later go away once the car warms up. will be doing this soon.

TheStudent77 12-12-2011 07:29 PM

Thanks!

Great DIY write-up. I was having the annoying whine too. I looked at my PS fluid & there was definitely air getting in there, because there it was bubbling when I looked in the reservoir.
I got the new o-ring from my local Honda dealer for $1.25. I was able to complete the o-ring replacement, completely empty my old fluid & refill with new fluid in less than 1/2 hour. NO MORE WHINE!

Thanks again!

Bearcat94 12-12-2011 10:46 PM

Mine too. Noticed it for the first time yesterday.

Got my O-ring, waiting on some Amsoil fluid. Will flush the system and replace the O-ring in a day or two.

BTW - the Honda parts desk guy knew EXACTLY what was going on as soon as he the part number I'd written down.

Majofo 12-13-2011 01:02 AM

:wish: :xfingers:

Scottwax 12-16-2011 01:42 AM

Prices for the O-ring are all over the map! Picked one up at Vangergriff Honda in Arlington (TX) for 96 cents. Swapped it out for the obviously dried out original O-ring and no more noise in the morning!

So much air was getting into the system and making it foam up the power steering reservoir was overflowing. With the new O-ring, no more foaming, no overflowing.

Mine was like this as well on the Wife's 04 Pilot. I thought I had a PS blow out or something. I couldn't believe it was only coming from the reservoir cap. Wasn't even noisy.

This o-ring was actually causing a loss of power-steering on my sisters 03 RSX. Not too much noise in this case either.

On the 05 TL, it just squealed like CRAZY at startup one morning. It was the first near-freezing morning of the year.

honda_nut 12-17-2011 01:14 AM

just did finished this today. my dad was surprised how easy and cheap it was. paid $1.50 for the o-ring. now my luxury car doesn't sound like a clunker driving through the streets in the morning lol.

jimmyl 12-17-2011 06:54 PM

I should have gone to a Honda dealership!! I got mine at Acura and it was $3.25...........

 I got the PS hose O-ring at an Acura dealership for $1.25, not including sales tax (total of $1.37, IIRC).

Bearcat94 12-17-2011 09:02 PM

:ugh:

What a PITA!!

I didn't have the right tool to get to that bugger of a 10mm bolt. :madfawk:

Drove me nuts. It's done though.

soria 12-19-2011 08:20 PM

How much fluid loss was there when doing this?

Just wondering if I should pick up some more PS fluid along with the o-ring?

Bearcat94 12-19-2011 09:14 PM

Very little for just changing the o-ring.

I "flushed" mine (using a baster-bulb thing), so I used two bottles (1 flush and 1 refill). Otherwise, it would've been just a few ounces.
