I second that notion...
as we get higher in mileage and years...there should be a section a section saying "if you're over this mileage or year...check these threads and DIY's". It seems there IS a rhyme and reason as we all get there to all the things that end up failing (sometimes prematurely) on this car.

Been a few days for this thread and being the cold weather season, it deserves a bump ttt. We had single-digit temps a few nights ago (very cold for my area). Got the p/s whine for the first time the next day. Found this thread (thankfully) and headed for the Honda dealer to get the red/orange o-ring. Apparently a bunch of folks had been in there for this problem because the parts guy had the part # memorized and gave me the new o-ring for free. Had the p/s hose recall done awhile back and yes, I still had the black o-ring in there. Swapped it out and noise is gone. Moderators, we NEED this thread in the 3G garage!

I read this thread a few weeks ago and wondered why so many people were having problems. Then last week my power steering starting whining when cold. I installed the washer in about 10 minutes...problem solved! Best $1.38 ever spent. Acurazine is awesome.

My O-ring went bad on this past Monday morning. I found this thread that evening after work and fixed it in 10 minutes after picking up the part on Tuesday. Best 74 cents I've spent thus far...

You can buy a 10mm wrench for $5 or less.

Thanks for your help. It woks great. Thanks for saving me all that money. Only cost about $15. That included two bottles of power steering fluid.

The torque on the ps inlet bolt is only 8 lb.ft! That's almost finger tight so don't torque it down very much. Inacc the red ballons are from MS Word. Just change the fill color & transparency. I also forgot to include to rub a little ps fluid on the new o-ring.. I was conflicted with my junk ps fluid but I did so anyways. If you don't have fresh ps fluid around you can dip your pinky in the res & just smear a coat around the new o-ring before replacing the inlet tube.

Haha this fix was so quick I did it on thanks giving day after our Family lunch. Everyone was outside hanging out & I popped the hood & knocked it out in 8mins. Made everyone think I was a natural at this mechanic stuff. LOL (for those that don't know, I am but a mere noob with mechanical things)

Totaly fixed my issue, THIS IS WHY I LOVE AZINE!!!!!! Dealer would have charged me HUNDREDS FOR A NEW PS PUMP.

Hello all,
i have the exact same problem for couple of months, and yes it is very embarrasing, I have taken the car to the local mechanic and had him change the PS fluid but the problem still remains.. now my question is, DO i need to bleed the system once this O ring is replaced???
Please let me know.. thanks

No. I can sometimes take an hour or so of running to get all of the bubbles out of the system but there will be an immediate improvement the second you fire it up after replacing it.

Toddy,
Same here, i was going to leave it for the weekend but i just drove to local Honda dealer, got the O ring for 82 cents... literally took 7 minutes to replace it and as 'i hate car' mentioned, that the noise should immediately go away.. which it did!!! Great writeup on this and thank you Majofo.....no moe embarassments when starting the car in colds..

I've been pretty busy moving and what not so I decided to take it to the dealer anyway, and here's how it went...

Dealer: We replaced the o-ring but it did nothing, you're going to need a pump. The total is about $600 and we'll go ahead and get it started right now.

Me:
(Thinking to myself: hmmm I remember reading on acurazine that it takes a couple miles for it to clear up) No thanks, I'll wait a couple days and come back. How much for the o-ring replacement?

Dealer:
No cost, it didn't solve the problem.

Wake up this morning and it hasn't been this quiet in months! So thank you guys, you've saved me once again!

This is great. Everyone is telling me that it's the Power steering. I am going to change the O-ring tomorrow (weather permitting since it's snowing now)

That worked out well. You should take it back and tell them it fixed it. I wonder if they were trying to rip you off...

Took me about 10-15 minutes from start to finish which included grabbing tools and reading your post again.

My results?
Before starting, the PS was really annoyingly loud.

Installed o-ring, after about 30 seconds, it got much quieter. Did see the bubbles in the reservoir which indicated the air in the system like previously mentioned. Turned the car off after I reinstalled the plastic motor shields.

36° this AM and was extremely quiet! Haven't heard it today at all.

Thank you so much for posting such a detailed DIY tutorial! This site is great!

I have this problem!!

Thanks Majofo, Im glad I read your post. I went to the dealer, they checked the belt, the power sterring rotor and could not find anything. They suggested that I bring the car in and leave it over nite so that they could check it our in the morning. If I dont try to fix it myself, at least I could tell the service manager where to look. Thanks again

How do the dealers not know about this? As soon as I asked about the powersteering o-ring, the parts guy was digging out the correct o-ring before I finished the sentence.

I bet they're baiting the guy.. see if he'll pay for a new pump instead.

Thank you SO MUCH for this fix. The dealer wanted $130 just to replace to o-ring; it took me less than 5 minutes and I just had to buy the $0.67 part and a $5 wrench. Awesome.

Just changed out my black o-ring for the orange o-ring. Brought the car with 104k miles at local acura dealer. They changed out ps and timing belt etc. But did'nt use the orange o-ring? What gives?

My stock '04 started the whine seemingly soon after the timing belt was replaced by the Acura dealer. I replaced the O ring (black) before finding this site. Whine initially improved for a few months, but now is worse than ever on cold starts from the pulley. Few bubbles in reservoir. Could the dealer have over tightened serpentine belt or is the pump just going bad or do I need to get the orange ring? Thanks in advance for a great site!

Wow, mine started after the timing belt was changed also. Hope this is not more complex than changing the o-ring.

Is the noise a whine or a squeal? Does the amplitude of the sound increase with RPM or change when you move the steering wheel around. If it's a squeal and increases with RPM, then it could be your auto serpentine belt tensioner. Very common to go out of spec and cause a belt related squeal, especially after a timing belt service.

If it's a whine / moan then more than likely it's the PS pump. The power steering pump doesn't need to be removed for the 3G TL to change the timing belt but it does need to be removed for many Acura models. I have a feeling the shop removed it when you had your timing belt changed. In that case, replace the inlet o-ring and check for any psf leaks around the pump assembly.
