Acuraziners you are the best !! once again my problem is solved and only cost me $.88 and 5 minutes to change it. I start my car and have the noise for 1 min. because of the air trap inside the pump, then the noise disapear. That noise in the morning was making me crazy !! and now its gone, i hope it never appears again. Very nice DIY thanks again.

so much for this DIY on this one.. i went out,, got the orange/red o ring.. i don't know how you guys did it,, but it was a BITCH to get any kind of wrench, socket in there,, i had to get a 10mm SMALL socket and then put an adjustable wrench on it from the top on an angle to not even get a 1/4 of a turn,, by the 5th time i got a grip and it turned, but at the same time it CRACKED that plastic neck piece right off! NIGHTMARE right now,, i super epoxeed that thing back to get there with a special mix that can with stand heat and fluids and all that,, yea it's on there strong i can't even move it,,, i started the car,, the red cap that goes to the resevoir blew straight up in the air and that's no where to be found now.. power steering fluid all over the engine bay,, so frustrated right now,, only good thing i got the stupid new o ring in there geez... can someone please direct me to a link or something where i can find this plastic neck piece and how much it is,,, would the dealership carry this part? is there a part number for it? please help i can barely turn the steering wheel it's a mess right now outside,,, please help quick! someone mentioned there's a metal neck piece, i'd rather have that but at this point i'll take anything to fix this

i cleaned up the fluid best i could,, i'll try and take a pic right now,, it's getting dark,, the white stuff your going to see is the epoxy super strenghty weld i used,, ugh so upset right now,, the car groans and i can't turn the wheel at alll... i'm really suprpised why the resevoir cap popped up like opening a bottle of champaign.. no where to be found the only thing i did was top off the fluid like everyone else did.. i don't know what went wrong other than cracking the plastic neck off... pics will be up in a minute,, i need part numbers guys asap,, i need this fixed by tomorrow! metal neck preferably, plastic only if i have to!

Majofo, YOU ARE THE MAN DUDE! life saver! thank you thank you,,, dealer my still be open now, gonna check still wondering why the cap blew off like that,, maybe some of the epoxy when i stuck the neck back together got in the inlet tube and caused a minor clog?

i guess i have to buy a new ps pump i don't know where this air is leaking in from now,, i start the car,, and all these tiny air bubbles start right up in the resevoir,, and that's with the new o-ring in... shut the car off,, they are there, but going away and then it all looks normal... start the car,, goes back to what it was doing and it's a horrible sound... i just find it hard to believe that it was pretty much perfectly ok with no sound issues except on cold start ups and some turns here and their,, and then i change the o-ring to a new "better" one,, and now the problem is worse or caused the pump to go bad??

I seriously have no idea what could have caused what you described. The o-ring is on a return line from the res so for enough pressure to buildup causing a blowout on the res is beyond comprehension. Did you replace the fouled return line / inlet & res? It might be salvageable as long as no contaminants got in the pump. Also was the PSF that leaked out from the inlet hose or the res?

If the PSF came from the res, I imagine you somehow plugged up / blocked the return line.. PSF cycled through from the high pressure line all the way to the res, then instead of cycling.. it was blocked and created a blowout. So if the res was the source then I would do a visual inspection of the inlet, make sure all reminants of the old o-ring are gone, buy a new o-ring, inlet & res.. turkeybast the old res, remove & replace it with the new one then refill the new res with fresh PSF.

fast forward to an hour later,, i get back from the honda dealer,, got a new neck piece, new o ring again... put everything back together,, made sure there was no epoxy in site anywhere... and now it's just a constant whine when turning, at idle,, i shut the car off i run to the front to see wwhat happens,, and the fluid starts pouring out from the res again.. like wtf is going on now? dry everything up.. run the car for a bit,, turning the wheel lock to lock several times, trying to pump the air out of the system.. you would think as i'm turning lock to lock and air is coming out,, and fluid is being poured in to replace the air,, that should fix everything right? nope... if overflows from the res when i shut the car off until the fluid level gets to inbetween the high and low line and then it doesn't overflow anymore when shutting the car off... so for now i guess i have to deal with not having the right amount of power steering fluid because filling it up to the high line is a waste,, it will just overflow out when i shut the car...

now i'm thinking maybe a very small piece of epoxy got inside the pump and it's messing everything up. i just don't see how if that's the case,, that it would be creating air bubbles... i don't know what to do.. buy a brand new power steering pump assembly? or buy a new resevoir, hoses, o ring? or ALL of it ... a simple fix is turning into $$$$$

oh and one more thing,, my steering does not get weak at any time,, i have full easy turning stopped and moving,, i can do it with one finger... but i got this crazy issue as posted above in the last couple posts...

this bottom o ring pictured,, is it the same size o ring as the one i replaced in the neck? i'm thinking when the pressure build up happend and the resevoir cap shot off, there was some kind of backpressure that happened at the same time and might have blown out this bottom o ring in hte picture? is it possible the air is now getting in thru there?

That o-ring seals the flow control valve, it's slightly larger than the inlet o-ring. Highly unlikely but for less than $1 it wouldn't hurt replacing it. Just make sure the tq spec is correct when you put it back. If I were you, I would replace the res & both feed lines to the res. It's fairly cheap & replacing the res would behoove you since it has a screen filter that catches crap in the system which is not serviceable / cleanable. If it still whines.. you probably need to overhaul the pump completely or save the money you'd spend to have it overhauled & buy a new pump.

just came back from acura dealer at mission viejo, CA. because my 04 tl is out of warranty, I went straight to parts asking for the part #(planing to do the work myself). The guy knew exactly why I was there for, he asked if I have done the hose recall, i said yes. He told me talk to service person see what they can do before I spend any money myself. so I spoke to a lady(first person came to me offering help while waiting. not good idea ) explained to her the problem, she asked me to schedule a check up to determine the problem(estimated time 1 hour 15 mins). Plus time to fix. I thought no, I can fix it in 15 mins why come here wasting time? So, I told her I'll call back for that. Went back to parts counter told the nice dude I'll just buy the O-ring. His face went WTF? asked me who did i speak to, then picked up phone called service manager(Name is Maxx). Service manager came asked for the key. 10 mins later, the O-ring was replaced no charge I was on my way out. He showed me the old o-ring, it was black color(not orange, wrong type?) and squared. Maxx said the ring should be round and flexable.

Sometimes you need to go to the top to get anything done.. Next time only talk to the SM.

My pump was whining a ton every time I would rev the engine and turn the wheels. This happened right after I did the timing belt and water pump job. So I replaced this gasket and the gasket that fits around the high pressure hose and the suction pipe that is coming out of the reservoir and I drove like this for about 250 miles before I completed the job. There used to also be a bunch of bubbles in the power steering liquid in the reservoir and now that and the noise is completely gone! Thanks a ton to ACURAZINE!!

hi guys im new and searched for this particular issue as i just recently picked up an 05 tl about a week ago. It just completely suprises me that an o-ring is all that needs to be fixed to fix the whine. Here i thought the whole unit would be replaced. Thanks guys ill have to tackle this soon before it gets any colder.

My car has this problem. So I went out and bought the o-ring for about 77cents. Now I'm having trouble replacing it. The 10mm bolt seems to be stuck. I've sprayed it with WD40 and some PB blaster and it doesn't seem to budge. I'm afraid to touch it anymore as I don't want to strip the bolt. What should I do? Should I just bring it in the dealership and cough up the 75$ or try going to a mechanic?

When I had this problem about (assuming it's the same problem) about 70,000 miles ago, my dealer went ahead and just replaced the whole PS pump. lol. Can't say I've heard the groan/whine since.

Thanks Mojofo. Going to do this next weekend. I had forgetten about it until the temps started dropping and the whine came back. Going to do Amsoil PSF at the same time.

Above is a related link for those that want to change the PS fluid too.
Just like I change my ATF with every engine oil change, I do a single drain of the psf reservoir with each engine oil change too. I just suck out the reservoir and refill with the Amsoil PSF.
Pic below is from last year

my 06 TL with 110K miles on it is whining at cold start currently in NY weather.
40-50 degrees at night. but the noise is gone during the day & after driving for a while.
I see a lot of small bubbles in the PS resevoir.
But I also see bunch of PSF spilled on the bottom of resevoir. PSF is definately leaking.
What could be the problem? can simple O-RING replacement fix this problem?
