DIY A-105: Power Steering Whine fix
#521
say wattt??
hello again guys/girls,
so.. i previously have the whining issue and i did the Oring as recommended back in about September. It worked perfectly, no more whining..
Until this Morning!! start up the car like normal, put my car in reverse, couldn't see the backup camera due to dirty lens. sooo, i put the car back into park and went out to clean it up.. and holy @#$%, whine noise started up, LOUDER than ever. I immediately pop up the hood. the SOUND came from the PS region. then it went away as i tried to figuring out where exactly it located..
any input on this would be appreciate!!

change the o-ring again or do a PS re-haul

haha.. i would but come on.. i just changed it roughly 3 months ago. i understand parts wear and tear but 3 months? i don't think it's worth it.
I might change the flush the fluid though..
to add info in, my car's at 114k miles w/o 105k service done yet!!

If anything your leaking, internally. With wear at 100k the internal seals and o rings begin to harden and flatten. It doesnt cost much to order the parts, about $20bucks for all 6.
There is even a DIY in the Garage on it.

check the garage and do the ps rebuild diy .. i did it a couple weeks ago. its less than $20 in parts and should take you 2 hours start to finish. might as well put a new belt on and flush your ps fluid while you are at it.

I took my car in last week to get this whine fixed. They said it wasn't the O-ring known issue, but instead it needed a new steering rack and pump. Grrrr...
Acura split the cost with me so I ended up having to pay $1050. I'm not done working with them on it as I don't think a steering system should fail after 106k miles on a decent car.

Mine only whines when it's warmed up and driven more than 20 minutes, and even then, is not reproducible. I am not a DIYer (and just dropped/lost the steering fluid cap in the innards of the underhood-can I drive it? How do I find another cap?)
Any suggestions of a fix for the sporadic and loud problem? And any suggestion for cap stuff. I don't want to drive without cap--where can I order one?

hoping this fixes my issue...have around 72K miles and I hear it when the engine is first initially started and goes away once its warmed up. It was more pronounced today for my car since its very humid.

2021 RDX A SPEC
Did this today on my 08 TL-s. Tough to get to that 10mm bolt but I used a 10mm wrench and it wasn't a problem. Found that the o-ring was already orange but replaced
it anyways. My car only makes the whine when actually turning slowly left or right
in parking lots or taking slow turns onto streets and on cold starts. If this doesn't resolve , I'm thinking pump or even the rack but ...by end of 2013 I might sell it in any case.

Acura MDX 2004 power steering whine
I see that TSB 07-060 only applies to the TL.
Does anyone this would fix the whine on the MDX ?

I'm sure it works on almost all modern hondas. I had to do it on 3 different Hondas so far (RSX Pilot & TL).

This doesn't only apply to cold weathers, I am down in PR and temps here are pretty high, car was making the noise at start up which is around 75-80 in the mornings and went away after 20 minutes of driving.
Thanks for this info, changing should be a breeze for anybody in reality.. don't be scared at taking a wrench to your car..
Car is a 2008 Base TL, it had the power steering hose recall but I found yesterday it had the black o-ring so as the TSB stated it wasn't changed when the hose was serviced. Turned on today and whine was gone..

Has anyone used a fenco or reman from napa auto parts to replace the pump? My steering is tight and heavy when I turn it I've had the o-ring replaced already and the whine is gone. I'm thinking of buying a pump without the Reservoir from napa or advanced auto parts, I don't feel like doing an overhaul.
Also any timing belt suggestions? If I'm going to have the pump off might as well replace the timing belt.
oh I have a 2006 TL automatic with 158K miles.

Been dealing with this whine for a while now. Saw this thread last night, bought the o-ring from my local Acura dealership for $.75 and swapped in out in less than 5 minutes.
Hopefully the annoying whine is gone in the morning!

I'm guessing it acted up with that freak cold front that recently moved through. I'm sure it'll work, let us know if it doesn't.

I replaced this on my 2004 TL when it had about 70k miles on it. Just ordered it to replace on my 2008 TL with 65k miles. I think this will probably red rid of the squeek it has until it's warmed up. If not, I will dig deeper.

i honestly let this problem go on for too long i dont think the o ring is gonna do it for me just a couple of days ago the sound got even louder so i went and bought the o ring and a new power steering pump gonna go and try and fix it will keep everyone updated on how that goes hopefully after all that the sound will go away

I need to do a PS pump rebuilt and flush it out with some Amsoil ![Yum](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/yum.gif)
Amsoil changed their formula recently and Honda/Acura is not on the list

The Amsoil viscosity never met Honda spec (~7.x vs Honda's ~11.x). I'm not sure it should have ever been listed as Honda compatible...

Damn it Swoosh.. stop giving bad advice. ![Spanky](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/spankie.gif)
Next thing you know there are going to be a string of posts of dumbasses who used Redline Racing type F for their PSF. I suggest you use Honda PSF only. If ydgaf, Redline High Temp ATF. Now gtfo!

Been getting the whine the past couple of cold mornings.
Going to try this O ring and hope it works...I only have 48k miles. I assume it isn't anything major...but with my luck, who knows.

Changed it a couple of hours ago...and it looked & felt just like the new one. I don't have high hopes for this to fix my issue. I won't know until it gets extra cold again in the AM
I thought about it some more, my whine actually got worse/louder 20-30 minutes into my commute to work. Engine compartment is definitely warm at this point.
Besides fluid drain and refill, what else should I check into??
Was there a recall for my year? 2007
Thanks for help guys!

Definitely change fluid. Do you notice any fluid old / new that has leaked from the ps pump? If not, best bet after fluid change (change reservoir too) is to replace the flow / regulator valve o-ring below the inlet. Or do a complete reseal (2 add'l seals + 2 o-rings). I'd start with new fluid and flow valve o-ring first.

^^THanks!
supposed to be cold next couple of mornings, so i'll keep my radio off...
If it persists, ill start with a drain/refill
could you send me a pic/link of this flow valve o-ring, you talk of? i'd appreciate it!!
