Well... It has been confirmed. This morning was the ULTIMATE test to confirm if the o-ring was my problem. In the mornings the whinning noise while at idle is loud and even louder when steering, until all warms up and disappears (just as the vid posted by BEARCAT posted). This morning was only the sound of a running motor...YAY! 100% confirmed FIXED! and was the solution to my problem. But not saying it will be someone elses fix.

Pls resort to this thread in general for repairs on the PS pump issues 3G TL owners experience.

Mine was JUST LIKE the vid... Yours is just as ROCKSTAR143 has explained his was... I would say yes! Rebuild/gasket/seal your pump as his write up shows. What do have to lose?

Yours is IDENTICAL to mine...down to the color and consistency of the fluid. I knew it wasn't oil...it feels a little like honey. Although not as delicious...

It worked for me...rebuild with the new orings I mentioned above and you should be golden. Mine is bone dry now.

everyone's so gdamn excited in this thread lol.

i should check if my p/s pump is leaking. My pre purchase inspection noted a "oil pan gasket leak"..i wonder if it's coming down from the p/s pump instead.

When troubleshooting my issue, I thought it was the oil pan gasket too...but if you look at the fluid, it probably won't be oil. If not, this is your problem.

I think it's a new issue...for 04's or so. I bet more and more people will start figuring out their ps pump is leaking...it's got to be a problem for similar year/mileage and climate (hot...makes the o rings crispy quick).

Well, I'm honestly glad this thread might be helping some people out. I had a feeling if my car...that has been well cared for and properly maintained had this problem at 76K, it was probably more prevalent than we all thought. Plus, it's not mission critical since it won't throw out a CEL or even affect performance (assuming you don't let your reservoir get dry). BUT, I didn't feel very good knowing there was a fluid leaking down the side of my engine.

I did my power steering seals this weekend....but ended up not doing the one behind te pulley because i didnt have a way to remove that bolt. Okay so everything looks good, but now I have that infamous power steering pump whine. It sounds exactly like the one in the power steering pump whine thread, but my seals are all new... What do you guys think?

Did you put some fluid on all the new seals? I also did not do the one behind the pulley.
Did you tighten down all the 10MM bolts really well?

Yes, I even bought a new seal for the inlet hose(again), but it still did not solve the steering pump whine. It's exactly like the video shows, there is fluid bubbling up when turning and the noise is exactly same.... Perhaps one of my seals inside the pump wasn't seated correctly? Any ideas?

Has to be, brother. You SURE you removed all the old seals? some of them are stubborn and needed to be picked out.

Also, I notice in the image of parts, there are a lot of hoses etc...how about the inlet/outlet on the reservoir, or all the connections to the hoses.

You're CERTAIN it's PS? I thought it was my ps pump originally and ended up being bad bearing on my tensioner pulley.

The main problem with troubleshooting THESE noises is you only have the issue with the car on and with the engine on you can't hear where the fk it's coming from!

Wow...what a PITA!!!
Did you make sure the seal stayed seated properly when you bolted down the 4 bolt cover?
What I did was put the shaft with all the appropriate seals upside down on the ground and then put the power steering pump down onto it, then bolted...otherwise the seal could move off center.

Hope it's an easy fix, man.

Fkn AWESOME!

Was I right about the rings not seating properly and then getting bolted down? It's tough to line it all up unless you flip the assembly upside down.

my power steering whines a bit, mostly when turning if the car is at a low speed or at idle. the noise goes away with speed. i replaced the inlet o-ring recently, which was already the orange one. the whine persists. i bought the car used in may. it now has 102k on it. would everyone say the o-rings are worn and this could be a good solution?

Great, now mine is leaking. It wasn't leaking when I did an oil change 5k miles ago.

I'll get some pictures on the one behind the pulley. You'll need an impact wrench to remove the pulley, some snap ring pliers and a socket to hit the seal in place.

I'm gonna be doing another reseal this weekend.

Yeah, let me know how that goes please...that was the ONE o-ring I didn't change although mine is NOT leaking anymore after changing ALL the other seals.

exactly same here. Whining and hard steering at low speeds. No leak from pump. No air bubbles. Possibly a leak somewhere else? Like in the rack?

I'm at 102k, on possibly the original drive belt. I was supposed to do the 105k service this week but haven't had time. Could the belt be stretched on and out of spec, affecting the performance of the power steering pump? The AC seems to start hard too, and that runs off of that as well?

My family owns a tree company, and a couple weeks ago the performance of the hydraulics on a stump grinder had gradually gotten bad. Finally the belt that drives the pump snapped. So possibly similar to my car?

Because these cars use a spring-loaded auto tensioner, the belt either works or it breaks. It's not like the old days where the belt will start to slip if it stretches too much. It's kinda a bad thing because there is very little warning that the belt is going to fail.

There is a chance that the spring-loaded tensioner itself is failing and not applying enough tension to the belt. But I would think that you would get a bunch squealing noise as the belt would start to slip. I'm not 100% on this though.

Plus, the bearings on my pulleys on the tensioner assembly took a dump way before I had a problem with tension. This is very strange...almost seems like a lack of flowing of the fluid, rather than a leak.

there is significant squealing from the pulleys when the car is on. Months ago I sucked some fluid out of the reservoir and exchanged for new. The whining wad fixed for a while but came back. I suppose if I complete the 105k service and flush PS fluid the whine and hard steering should be gone. If not, I've got bigger problems, right?

this thread is pretty awesome btw

^^^I wish I knew...the bearing thing coupled with the possibility that the belt is slipping...might be part of it. The belt tensioner swap and belt swap is a 30 minute job.

Thanks btw...
