Question Cruise control does not engage

(6mt 06TL) Cruise control stopped engaging out of nowhere. No change made. Worked one morning and didn't work the next. Cruise on/off button lights up to enable cruise set, but cruise doesn't engage and light for engagement doesn't light up. I'm getting continuity on the set switch. The brake pedal switch seems to work fine and brake lights come on. Clutch pedal switch is also operating correctly. I wouldn't think anything happened to the wire harness. I tried unplugging a taillight, but that didn't do it. I also tried lightly tapping the brake & clutch pedal while trying to set cruise, but I had no luck there. I don't think it has anything to do with the clutch or brake pedal switch because I pulled up on the pedal while trying to engage cruise. The brake pedal switch has the correct continuity on the pins, and I can't start the car without pressing the clutch pedal. Both switches work.

No. 13 fuse isn't blown. The horn and speedo works. The no. 18 fuse under the dash isn't blown.

Looking at the electrical diagram, it looks like the horn switch shares the power with the cruise combination switch. So, if the horn works, the combo switch is getting power. I'm getting continuity where needed on the combo switch, so I know the switch is good. The signal leaves there into the gauge cluster to light the indicators and then onto the Ecu.

There has to be a continuity issue between the combo switch and gauge. Maybe it's the cable reel?

Clueless here. Effecting checks out after leaving the steering wheel out through the cable reel. Therefore, that indicator light on the gauge assembly should be lighting up and the cruise should be working UNLESS something is cancelling it out elsewhere. I give up....for now. I'm used to not having cruise control.

Let us know if you find the problem. I'm going to throw holy water on mine.

So, out of nowhere, my cruise control started working last night. I've done nothing to the car since my last post other than the power window reset procedure and hitting the rev limited once while entering the freeway. Weird....

so maybe a short in that clutch wire? I've got the 2004 TL repair manual, which has a troubleshoot for cruise control not working. PM me if you want the PDF.

I have the Helms manual in PDF. That's what I was using for diagnosis. Thanks though!

If the clutch switch shorted out, wouldn't I be able to start without pressing he clutch?

It looks like it was the clutch switch. Any movement or vibration would disengage the cruise control. I adjusted the switch so that it's being pressed farther in when the clutch pedal is disengaged (at rest).
