Check Engine Light and Pumping Gas connection
So I was pumping gas tonight and I had the car shut off. It was getting hot so I turned it on before it was done pumping so I could turn on the A/C. All seemed well - we drove the car out to eat came home parked it for several hours no problems. Got in my car drove about 3 miles and my check engine light came on?? I thought okay maybe gas cap not all the way closed so turned it off checked that and turned it back on - light still there. Could the light be on from the pumping with the car on earlier and it just take awhile to clear? Any ideas? I have an 05 with 150K miles on it. Was just in the shop on Wednesday for an oil change. I am behind on my filters by about 10,000 miles but other than that all services (per my service minder etc.) have been up to date.
Any help would be great! Thank you.

It's very likely the CEL was triggered by the car running at the pump. It will take a series of engine cycles (on/off) for it to clear. I think Autozone will clear the code for free if you don't want to wait for it to clear itself.

you cant run the engine with the cap off- it messes up the system and will take 2-3 days actual driving to get it to relearn that there is not a system leak
there is a reason the cap says minimum 3 clicks- it has a built in torque wrench device-
3 clicks assures the cap is set correctly

want to know how close to becoming engulfed in fire you came with that-- get in the car- start car- get out of car trick?!!
Smart drivers touch a bare hand to bare metal of the pump case (sides are not painted for this reason)
BEFORE touching the nozzle--especially after its been filling your car and has an active static charge from the flow of gas thru the hose
Static electricity can be a bummer- that touch to bare metal case moves any charge on you to the pumps ground wire into the earth = protects you
