Car surges in power when I turn air vents on.

2005 Acura TL Base AT - Mileage 150k

Problem:
Car on, Turn on vents and the radiator fan rubs on the shroud around it, and the car wants to die when Im driving it. Doesn't want to die when I am just sitting there but makes an awful sound when idling with the vent air on. Happens when ac or heat is on. If that makes any sense. Was working fine when I went to work, and noticed it when I left in the evening. Did something seize up or what is the deal?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

leaning towards an AC compressor clutch, just went to test a few things.

Made sure the cabin filter wheel wasn't stuck.
Tried with AC ON - made a chatter noise
Tried with AC OFF - ran fine

Let me know if you think im headed in the right direction!

So, the blower works fine? One of the electric radiator fans is rubbing the shroud? Why, is something cracked or bent? You can't resolve that?

If the problem exists with A/C off, and just the blower on, you have serious problems. If the car wants to stall with the A/C on, the A/C system likely has an issue thats causing an unusually high load on the engine. You can determine if the clutch is engaging by looking at the compressor while the engine is running. You can see the inside portion spin.

Is the compressor spinning normally with the A/C on? And does it stop with the A/C off?

The blower works fine, one of the fans was rubbing the shroud at first but now anymore. Don't know why. Nothing is cracked/bent. The problem does not exist with the A/C off. Only when the A/C is on, there is a chattering noise coming from the front passenger side of the engine compartment. I will have to look at the compressor when I have time.

Is the compressor towards the top or bottom? I can look later this evening if I have time.

Thanks for you response!

The compressor is on the bottom front of the engine, towards the bumper. It's probably something messed up with the compressor, but its possible its a restriction in a line. It's unlikely its the compressor clutch or something you can fix externally.

You could simply unplug the compressor and the issue would go away, but the A/C won't work until you get the compressor replaced and the system evacuated and recharged.

The fault is most likely with the compressor, but you'd need someone to diagnose it further if you wanted to be sure.

putting some guages on the A/C will tell you what's up, if your high side pressure is too high (it will kick out the compressor at a certain point) at the same time your low side is too low, there is most likely a restriction in the system. might want to check the H block/expansion valve... noisy compressor can mean low oil in system or it's about to die. Either way check it out and replace the parts that are causing issues.
