Can you clean a catalytic converter?
#2
After I posted that I started doing a few queries and it looks like BG 44k also cleans the catalytic converter, at least to some degree. And I bought some and ran it through one gas tank about a month ago and it really made my engine idle much smoother and much stronger like instead of an unstable 600 RPM and now pulls at 750 very consistently and very smoothly. In general it responds and and performs much better. And I was thinking about running another can through it just to see if there's any more Improvement and since I just read that it will clean catalytic converters I may just do it again anyway .. awesome

I responded to another 3G thread recently. Check out my solution for my 4G, which applies to yours as well.

to each their own.. But I am confident BG 44k is far better than Sea Foam anything.. But I do not know what Cataclean is.
Still, I had such good results with BG from 1 can, (my engine idles sooo much better) that I am trying to find some locally to purchase another can. But no one carries it. Autozone, o'reilly's, Advance auto, only Amazon.. but that requires shipping.. close to Christmas. I think BG used to be for "professional use" and was only available from a distributor, but that is changing.
Anyway! I just heard Scotty Kilmer say on YouTube that if a Cat is going bad, it will rattle inside if you bang on it. Of course, that would indicate total destruction.. haha But I dont know if a Cat has disintegrate before it stops functioning properly. But I do know that exhaust fumes should pass through the Cat and not around it, and out the tailpipe. Because the "grid" has to touch all the area fumes in order to have a chemical reaction which burns off access fuel vapor from the exhaust. If not a chemical reaction then HEAT alone will burn off unburned fumes. So ya, in that case I can see why a broken up Cat will not perform properly because some of the exhaust fumes will go around the Cat and not get burned off. But something tells me these Cats do not break up very easily. So the likelihood of it being bad from a simple break down in its structure would be rare.
But HEY, if Carbon is built up on the leading edge of the CAT, then ya, I think BG may be able to help with carbon build up.. (whether in the fuel injector, or valves or exhaust system.
I was getting a Rotten egg smell when I nailed the throttle.. but not so much now. I think the BG has helped in more ways than just cleaning the F.I.

I never had any codes. I was getting just a rotten egg smell when I nailed it. I thought maybe there could be carbon build up on the valves, and therefore not allowing the exhaust to completely close, thereby some unburned fuel getting into the cats and causing that smell. But to my surprise, my engine runs much smoother as a result of adding 1 Can of BG 44k. Now, as far as the rotten egg smell, It's harder to diagnose because I dont floor the gas pedal that often.. but the few times that I did, I did not pass out from the fumes. haha So I think it helped. So I want to do another can... man... =)

no.. yes I know... it needs it.. well, per the recommended interval... Yes the tolerances may be off a little bit.. maybe.. but I do change my oil every 3500 - 5000 miles since I had it 122k now
And the Engine does not have any noisy chatter..like from lifters or valves.. But again, at high RPM, that may be the first sign... That's when things get spinning the fastest.. and tolerances may be more pronounced crucial.. so ya in other words, it could use a valve adj

I totally agree. it bugs me. I will have to take it to a dealership (Lute Riley) or do it myself. Probably dealership. I don't know of any other second hand auto repair shops that can do it except for one in Denton TX which is an 45 min away doing 75mph on the highway

I'll be honest with you, it's scary the first time, but it's not rocket science.
If you need to do your valve cover gaskets or paint them or whatever, that's the ideal time.
I FIRST did it along with my very first timing belt service and doing both at the same time was
DAUNTING!

I believe it. anything done for the first time always takes longer..But doing a timing belt and a valve adjustment at the same time, for the first time, wow! 3 weeks? haha
I would need 2 cars for that. 1 as a backup.

it was a win though, love how it sounds without the 3rd cat!

Mine just threw a low threshold bank 1 couple weeks ago, used dura lube severe exhaust and catalytic converter cleaner for one tank and my code has been gone since. Got a can of cata clean I'll run through it in a couple months as well just incase.
