Caliper rattling on 2007 TL Type S

I brought my car to the dealership on multiple ocations for a loud rattle coming from the front driverside wheel every time I go over bumps. If the road is bumpy, there is a constant rattle. The dealership told me this was a known issue and that because the calipers can't be too tight (in order to avoid extreme brake pad wear) this is normal. Has anyone else heard of this or dealt with it? They never mentioned this the first couple times the car was in, they actually kept the car for an extended period of time because they couldn't figure it out. I am concerned that since they couldn't find anything, they said its normal. My car sounds like a clunker and I am extremely annoyed, please help!

I guess it's safe to say nobody else has experienced this problem. Does anyone have any advice other than going to a different dealership?

Thanks.

It certainly isn't normal. Never worked on the Brembos, but I would say if it is a brake component, it would be the pads that you hear as the caliper is bolted down tightly and doesn't move as in the single piston TL. Make certain it's the brakes, just keep some pressure on the pedal with your left foot while driving over the bumps with the right foot on the accelerator. You don't need to apply the brakes hard, just enough pressure to make certain the pads are energized and tight against the rotor. If it is the brakes, hardware is definitely missing or damaged.

+1
I have a few rattles (dash and various trim) in the car but nothing that's coming from the wheel.

Thanks for the tip on applying the brakes. Unfortunatelly even with the brakes applied the rattling didn't stop. I guess I will bring it back to the dealership and see what they say this time. Thanks again.

I've got a similar problem w.'08TLs. the dealer replaced something (?strut) but the clunk persists. it's gotta go back in when I get around to dropping it off...

It's not the caliper that is rattling. Those bolts are torqued down to 125ft/lbs!!

(Well, it is possible if the calipers have ever been removed and were not retorqued to spec. There is a member here who lost a caliper while speeding down the highway because he didn't use a torque wrench to tighten the caliper bolts after a DIY brake job.)

Are you the original owner? Have your brakes ever been serviced?

It might be your brake pads that are making the noise, but I doubt it after hearing that you still have the noise while applying brakes. It's possible the spring clips have weakened or one of the pins holding a spring clip has fallen out. Have someone who knows what they're looking for check those items.

I have the same noise in my '07 TL-S. I will be bringing it back in on Saturday for another diagnosis. The first time I brought it in, they heard the noise but couldn't find the source, so they just checked the subframe to make sure all was torqued properly. So glad to finally hear that someone else has this problem!

Had the same issue, same tire, everything. I bitched endlessly and they finally fixed it. The report says "Faulty maint shaft vent shield. Correction replaced heat shield & test no noise"

So basically it was some heat shield or from what I was explained, it was some brake dust shield that was loose and rattling every time I went over some small bumps, etc.

Hope this helps

Thank you kettlepress. I am dropping mine off tomorrow and will see if this helps them correct the issue.

Hondas are famous for rattling heatshields. I'd bet it was that too, but if it's not, then it's probably as kettlepress mentioned the rotor dust shield. This is an easy one to check yourself, actually. It'll be a thin disc-shaped piece of metal on the backside of the rotor. Just wiggle it. If it's lose, then that's what's rattling.

Thanks again for everyone's input. I picked up my car yesterday and the dealership found the left front brake splash shield to be loose, so they resecured it. Not sure they would have found this without your help. That was the third or fourth time I had it in. Previously they replaced the strut, caliper and brake pad, with no luck.
