Broken Axle

Broken Axle
My 2005 TL transmission failed a few weeks ago. The dealer wanted $4K for a new one. I have high mileage (155K) and didn't want to put $4K into the car. He recommended a local transmission shop to do a rebuild, which cost me $2,700.
Now, less than 2 weeks later, I thought the newly rebuilt transmission failed, as the car wouldn't drive again. I had a distinctly different noise this time, though, so I was unsure what it was.
I had it towed back to the shop that did the transmission, and they tell me that my axle is broken. I don't recall hitting any hard potholes or driving over anything that would have broken it. Given the timing of this, I am suspicious that the broken axle is a result of the transmission work.
The guy at the shop tells me that it's not possible, there is nothing they do with the transmission that could break the axle.
I'm just looking for some educated opinions on whether this is likely the truth, or whether their transmission work have caused this.

unless they broke it installing the axle back into the transmission there's not a big chance of it failing due to the transmission replacement. There's only 2 points of contact with both axles/intermediate shaft to the transmission, and that's the splined axle shaft.
it's not uncommon for the axles to break. My passenger side axle which is connected to an intermediate shaft that connects to the transmission was failing. The symptom manifested itself in clicking during turns. This happened with less than 70k miles on the clock.
Other people have had their axles break completely as well. If it's the outer joint that broke, that's pretty typical since that experiences a lot of stress especially during turning.

probably not related at all to your trans work. More related to the 155K miles. Your due for some axles

Thanks all for your replies. I also talked to my dealer service manager, and he said the same thing. I guess I'll chalk it up to bad timing. When it rains, it pours! :-(
