That would be your parking pins disengaging.

When the car is sitting on a slope, there's a lot of pressure on the parking pins. Imagine pulling a pin out while there's a lateral force exerted on it. That's what's happening.

It's not necessarily detrimental to your transmission, but it's not healthy, either.

To avoid it, do this.

1. Stop vehicle, stand on the brake pedal.
2. Put it into Neutral.
3. Engage parking brake.
4. Let off the brake pedal; car might move a bit, but the parking brake will hold it as long as it's in good condition.
5. Put it into Park.

When you leave,

1. Put it into Neutral, stand on the brake pedal.
2. Disengage parking brake.
3. Put it into Drive.

This will prevent the parking pins from the extra pressure, thus preventing the noise that makes you cringe.

it could also happen on slightest slope. Just near-slam on the brake when you go from P to D
