Bad starter and neutral safety switch

I had some trouble with my 05 TL this past weekend where it wouldn't start. The starter would click once and everything would power on but the car wouldn't crank or start. Long story short, I ended up replacing the starter but the car still wouldn't start unless I messed with the shifter, moving it from park to neutral and back several times before it finally started. I figured it was the neutral safety switch that went bad and not the starter but then I had the old starter checked and sure enough, it was bad. Ultimately, I replaced both the starter and the neutral safety switch and the car is starting fine now. However, it seems highly unlikely that both these parts would go bad at the same time. Is there some sort of connection between the two so that one going bad would damage the other one?

you probably replaced the starter prematurely and the NSS could have fixed your problem.

the constant stress of trying to start it could have caused premature wear too
but that's probably not the answer you wanted to hear

just be happy it's all said and done, you shouldn't have any problems with those components for a while

It couldn't have been more than 20 times that I tried starting the car with the old starter where it didn't work. Is that really enough to break it? I probably tried that many times with the new one as well but it still seems to be working.

Your trouble above reminds me of an incident I just had with my CL-S 6-speed on the 24th; however, mine did not involve the starter. Everything in your second sentence occurred with me. For your automatic, it appears the NSS has a similar function as the clutch (Inhibiter) switch assembly in a manual transmission. Although, in my case, to get the car to function, I did not have to replace the switch, I had to replace a mangled 13+ year old plastic clutch pedal stopper that helps actuate the switch when the pedal is engaged to start the engine. What a pain in the neck! Glad to hear you got it resolved even though you had to spend a little money.
