Bad gas mileage

I have a black 2008 Acura TL, and I'm getting pretty bad gas mileage.

It says I'm getting 24 mpg on the computer display, but after around 100 miles of driving the tank is already half gone.

I'm averaging about 250 miles per entire tank of gas, and I'm absolutely tired of how this car guzzles gas so quickly.

Any ideas on the issue? Oil life is at 30 percent.

Do you check your mileage when you fill up? Meaning, driven miles divided by the number of gallons you put back in? Just saying, the MID could be wrong. What's your average MPH? How many miles on your car?

Where does the car tell you what MPG you are getting. I have a 07 TL-S and can't find this info.

The buttons on the right side of the steering wheel, press the arrow up or down until you get to Trip Computer, then hit select. It'll show AVG MPH, MPG, driving distance and driving hours. Hit the down arrow and it'll show you approximately how far you can go until you run out of fuel.

There are HUNDREDS of these threads. Some very recently. Do a search. Your mileage is fine.

Sorry, I don't believe this. Were this true, you would be getting 11.7 MPG and I just don't see that happening because if it was, you'd more than likely have something wrong with your car.

Screw the MID... do a real gas mileage check then report your findings.

The seem to come in waves, don't they? One thing that a few of us have said over the years on this site about this issue is this.

If someone is so worried and concerned about their mileage, why did they buy a TL? I believe the reason we're seeing a rebirth of these threads now is because of so many TL's being purchased used. Their prices are in line now with people who wanted them and can now afford them, but want something that will deliver the same economy they have become accustomed to getting. This tends to couple with threads from people who want reassurance that they can use regular grade fuel in the TL engine.

Actually for what it is, the TL delivers quite decent fuel economy. Both of my 3G TL's do pretty darned good in this department.

On mine the issue is that the gas gauge assumes you are retarded and reads Empty when there are 4 gallons left in the tank. I did the calculations, the Low Fuel light came on, I filled it up, and I had 4 gallons still in the tank. So - yeah, the gas gauge is misleading, because you really have 80-120 miles left when it says you're on empty. Now I just mentally add 1/4 tank to what the gas gauge says to make myself feel better about the mileage. The mileage computer is accurate, at least on mine.

Mileage on the highway is pretty decent - around 30 for me. Mileage around town is absolutely horrible - between 18 and 20 for me. It weighs a lot and has a powerful engine. I find myself pulling away from stoplights and accelerating a lot faster than the cars behind me, just because it can - but that kills your mileage. The TL was my first purchase of an "entry-level luxury" car - all my previous cars have been Civics and similar. It takes some adjustment to lay out for the premium gas, the premium tires, etc., etc.

This is very true. I came from a 5MT, 4-cyl Accord. I averaged about 33-34 MPG between fills and was a bit worried coming to the TL-S. Well now I average about 28-29 MPG, with 2 more cylinders and more than 120 extra HP. Couldn't be happier.

Right. And while your former Accord only required 87 octane fuel you also knew what you were buying and what to expect. The best I ever managed on a long trip was one leg at 33.94 MPG. That was in the summer (September) with the A/C running the entire time and at highway speeds. The factory EL42's were still on my '04 manual and I was quite pleased with that.

Fuel economy is by no means my prime concern. I view it as icing on the cake when it turns out to be decent to good.

In my '06 TL with the 6-speed, all summer I have been getting 29-31 MPG. The MID is correct, though it would be good if it carried it out to a decimal place since it tends to round up regardless. I also calculate it the old-fashioned way at fill up time doing the division to verify the MID. I am getting 430-450 miles out of a tank. Run 93 octane.

Winter I was getting 26-28 MPG.

I am in New England - they change the gas formula entering winter and exiting winter, that has something to do with it, I think.

Those that complain about the TL running on premium, you should be happy. Tuning an engine for premium increases mileage and power. You can get away with a slightly higher compression ratio and slighly more aggressive timing. Without premium your mpg would be lower and you would spend more money filling up more often. Having to run on premium is a good thing.

That's one of the reasons. The other reason is that air is more dense in colder months than in warmer months. There is more oxygen in a cubic foot of air in the cold. this means that the engine could run lean in colder months but the ECU compensates for this by increasing the fuel shot to the cylinders to arrive at the optimum ratio (14.7:1). More fuel and more oxygen = more power but lower mileage.
