BAD CONVERTER and SOLENOID PURGE CONTROL VALVE
i took my 04 tl with 65k to the dealer, they told me i have an emissions and a rear converter code. they said i need to change the solenoid purge control valve and the rear converter. i want to know what is the job of the solenoid purge control valve? and with these two bad things, would this be the reason of why i only get 14 miles per gallon?

I think you mean an evap purge control valve. This just vents gasses from your emissions system. The rear cat code should be something like catylist efficiency below threshold. and yea basically means you need a new cat. Neither one should have any effect on your gas miliage.

The ECU has no way of knowing if the third cat (aka, converter) is bad. Many of us remove the entire third cat and the ECU never throws a code. There are no sensors beyond the primary cats. Thus, the ECU has no knowledge of what is going on beyond the primary cats.
Therefore, when you say "rear converter", you must be meaning the primary cat on the rear cylinder bank.
Do you have a check engine light (a yellow symbol) appearing in your gauge console? If yes, this would definitely cause poor mileage.
BTW - I don't recall reading of any bad converters on unmodified TL's on our forum. I would be surprise if your converter is bad. I would think there is a much highly probability that an oxygen sensor in the converter went bad.

thanks for the reply guys and yes i do have all those three lights, thats y i took it to acura and they said the converter in the back rear cylinder head + solenoid purge valve needed to be change because thats what is making the check engine light on. i already change the o2 sensors so the code for those were gone.. my car was a flood car i dont know if thats a reason for my converter going bad? do you know if a bad converter makes for bad mileage?

You may want to check the primary 02 sensor on that bank just to make sure as that would be the most likely cause for bad mileage.
One question, is it low on power?
A plugged convertor will cause a noticeable drop in power while a bad 02 will cause a very slight drop in power but a big change in gas mileage.
