ATF Change..How much old stuff is left inside

Actually, I really just wanted to start up my first thread! So I did a little calculation to figure how much old AT Fluid remains with each drain. Per our manuals, the capacity is 7.6 qts and you can drain out 3.1 at a time.
So here it goes....

1st
---------------------------old / new
Drainage--------------- 3.1 / 0
% Oil in Sump--------- 0.5921052630 /.407894737

2nd
---------------------------old / new
Drainage--------------- 1.835526316 / 1.264473684
% Oil in Sump---------0.350588643 / 0.649411357

3rd
---------------------------old / new
Drainage--------------- 1.086824792 / 2.013175208
% Oil in Sump---------0.207585381 / 0.792414619

4th
---------------------------old / new
Drainage---------------0.64351468 / 2.45648532
% Oil in Sump---------0.122912396 / 0.877087604

5th
---------------------------old / new
Drainage--------------- 0.381028429 / 2.718971571
% Oil in Sump---------0.072777077 / 0.927222923

I hope this is correct LoL. And I hope it helps!

Posts: 594 Doing the math. I assume 3qts are drained and the tranny holds 7.6qts. Each time you run the car a short distance through all the gear to mix the new fluid with the old and that you get a perfect dilution of the old and new fluid. If you keep doing this you should eventually get all the fluid out. Here are the Number of Fills and their related % of new fluid now in the tranny at each stage of the flush.

Drain/Fill
1=39.5%
2=63.4%
3=77.8%
4=86.6%
5=91.9%
6=95.1%
7=97.0%
8=98.2%
9=98.9%

So using just 4 fills will only get 86.6% of the old fluid out.

According to my calculations, you will need to do over 4 drains & refills to reach Amsoil recommendation of 90%.

please check my post in the following thread on page 1

https://acurazine.com/forums/show...50&page=1&pp=25

After the 1st Drain & Refill

3.2qts Synth (43.24%) & 4.2qts Honda (56.76%)

2nd Drain will flush another 3.2qts but only 43.243% of that (1.82qts) will be the Honda fluid concentration in the drain.

After the 2nd Drain & Refill

5.02qts Synth (67.84%) & 2.38qts Honda (32.16%)

After the 3rd Drain % Refill (Using the same calculations as the 2nd Drain)

6.05qts Synth (81.76%) & 1.35qts Honda (18.24%)

After the 4th Drain & Refill

6.63qts Synth (89.59%) & 0.77qt Honda (10.41%)

After the 5th Drain % Refill

6.96qts Synth (94.05%) & 0.44qt Honda (5.95%)

Best regards

The general consensus in gen2 is the 3qts X 3 times method with 5 minute drive between each drain
Bout as good as your gonna get!

Does the manual suggest doing it warm?
The transmission might not run the fluid through the cooler in front of the radiator until it is up to a certain temperature?

Im not sure...but when Ive done it on my parents cars, my dad made me drive around for 20-30 mins and then drain it....He used the same logic as you did. I intended on using the same procedure when I do it on the TL at 12000 miles

To me, the hardest part is driving around to circulate the fluid. Then having to drain the hot fluid is also a part that I hate.

I recommend doing a "maintaince drain" when you do an engine oil change (or during every other engine oil change). This is how I do mine. This way you avoid the drive to circulate the trans fluid. And if you change your engine oil with your engine cold, you can also avoid the Hot trans fluid situation too.

Just do some math for your given situation. If you change engine oil every 6,000 miles and do a "maintaince drain" of the trans fluid every other oil change interval, then you will get a complete trans flush (3 trans drains) every 36,000 mile.

You know what........i think i may start doing this.....Thanks!!! By the way, do you use the Honda ATF or some other brand (i.e. Amsoil)?

It's best to do it warm. All of the particles you want out of the engine/trans are then suspended in the oil. If you do it cold, they have settled to the bottom, and do not come out when you drain the oil.

To be honest, I change my engine oil every 3,000 miles. I use Mobil1 engine oil. I change my trans fluid with every oil change (every 3,000 miles) too. I use Mobil1 trans fluid.

Having any particles suspended in my fluid is a "non issue" for me.

But for others, I concur that this is a valid point.

ankur914,

"What ATF to use ?" This is a controversial question.

The vast majority of people will say that you must use Honda Z1 ATF. But, being the rebel that I am, I use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. Be warned, the Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF produces more firm, more positive, slightly harder shifts (upshifts and downshifts) than the Honda Z1 ATF.

But, the firm and positive shift is what I like.

If you appreciate the gentle, seamless, un-noticable shifts of the oem car, then be sure to use the Honda Z1 ATF. Road Rage seems to like the Amsoil ATF (see links below).

If you change it cold, you are missing one of the reasons for changing the oil. As the internals wear, they create particles. If you change the oil warm, these particles get drained with the oil. If you change it cold, they have settled to the bottom of the pan and don't get drained. The more particles, the faster the wear.

3k is overkill, especially with synthetic, but that's just my .

...Just wear gloves, pull the plug, then wait for the engine to cool before worrying about the filter.

LOL! Yea...its overkill, but like Inaccurate, i change my oil every 3K (I know its lasts a lot longer, but old habits die hard

Inaccurate, Thanks for the info dude...Ive read those RR journals, but the only issue i have with Amsoil is that I fear the dealer telling me "hey, you didnt use Honda ATF fluid, so your warranty is void" if anything ever goes wrong with the transmission. Im thinking about getting this in writing from the dealer since he said its ok to use... Paranoia....LOL!
