2nd opinion on "7 year" service

I have an '05 TL with 95K miles.

10 months ago I went into my dealer for a B1 service. When I got my car back, the tech noted "Oil seeping front side.. Poss Front Oil Pump, Rec 7 years service and reseal oil pump..Fuel Induction service would be good idea."

My car has always been meticulously maintained and has no issues that I can detect whatsoever. I have never seen a drop of oil under my car. Now the car is calling for an A1 service, so I emailed my tech to inquire how much they would charge to perform the A1 and the suggested resealing of the oil pump and fuel injection service.

He responded:
Your best bet is to reseal the oil pump at the same time doing your "7 year service" as there is duplication of labor. The "7 year service" includes the A1 and is as follows:
  • Oil and filter change
  • Brake inspection
  • Tire rotation
  • Valve adjustment with new gaskets
  • Timing belt and drive belt replacement inspect water pump
  • Replace spark plugs and a complete inspection
The estimate is for just the above list is $1510.00 plus tax
To reseal the oil pump at the same time is an additional $649.00
The fuel induction service is optional and would be an additional $139.00.
I can give you 10% off the total bill.

Is this on the up and up and if so, is this a fair price?
Is there such a thing as a "7 year service?"
Should I replace the timing belt at this point?
Do I need to service the fuel induction?

Any feedback from the forum gurus would be greatly appreciated before I write a check for $2100.

Thank you!

No, don't bother with most of those services-- just get an oil & filter change and tire rotation.

The TL's service schedule is based on the Maintenance Minder (when service codes come up, like A1-A4 or B1) and not on time or mileage. The timing belt should be changed when service A4 comes up-- and that's probably not going to happen for another year or two based on your usage.
The only exception to the Maintenance Minder codes is the brake fluid-- it must be changed every three years per the owner's manual (page 202 or so).

The valve adjustment is useful if the valves are noisy; otherwise, skip it.

WTH is a fuel induction service? If the dealership didn't explain what it was, don't get it.
If it's only the addition of a fuel injector cleaner or additive, don't bother.

If oil is seeping out, but neither hitting the ground nor coating the undercarriage and doesn't affect the oil level, don't bother fixing it.

The timing belt and valve adjustment prices are OK for a dealer, but high for an independent Honda shop.

As Will says, you can likely go another year or so on the TB job. Technically it is 105k miles or 7 years but for starters you live in a mild climate and the TB can go more than 7 years. Some may argue that point but I would run it another 10k miles. The oil pump seal, I suppose if it is a minor seeping it should be ok and just keep an eye on it although it would make sense to take care of it when the TB job gets done.

There is nothing in the OM about a 7 year service for TB/water pump. The only thing is to follow the MID. When it shows 4 then get the TB belt service done.

I'm at 10 years and a measly 58k miles. I've been taking my sweet time getting the TB service done...

Older Acura's, I believe call for 7 yrs or 105k (this was in their owner's manual). It is not written in my 3G TL's manual OR my 2G MDX manual. Just follow MID.

Fuel induction service... if the car is running funny then maybe. Again there is NOTHING in the OM that states this needs to be done. This is mostly an upsell in services.

+1 on going another 10k and being fine. I changed my timing belt 6 months ago ( mines an 04 with 110k ) and it looked new. We have -20 to 100+ temps here in Kansas. With the Cali weather of ~48 at night and ~70-80 during the day, you are golden. Dealers do get a bad rap for charging high prices, but if something goes wrong they will usually own up and fix it. And if they say they wont, a quick call to corporate will get their mistake fixed. If you go to a mom and pop place and they screw something up... they will probably say " it was like that when it came in".

All of our oil pumps "leak", but unless the oil hits the ground I'm not going to worry about it. But if you are going to get that fixed have it done during the timing belt change.

+4 on not getting the fuel induction service done. You can easily do that yourself.... that's just filling it up with premium gas?!?

When I bought my TL I was gung-ho to do the scheduled servicings before they were due. After being on this site and speaking to other Acura owners I'm content that if I just follow the MID things will get done on time and not before they need to be. The only thing I don't follow is the oil interval. I change that about every 7,000-9,000 km.

One other thing you can consider doing is using a 'high mileage' oil with seal conditioners in the oil. It may not help the oil pump seal, but then again it may and it's a whole lot cheaper than the $649 your tech wants. If the car doesn't observably use oil (as in you don't see any on the ground and no loss when checking the dipstick), I'd be less likely to opt to fix it. I agree with waiting til the 10K miles before the TB service unless you get a huge discount on it by doing it sooner.
