2006 TL codes and emission tests-North Carolina

First, I have to mention, I know almost nothing about vehicle repairs, so be gentle please.

I have a 2006 TL with 219k miles. I live in North Carolina where we have to pass emissions inspections yearly to get the tags renewed. Took it in today and it didn't pass. The shop said I needed a front catalytic converter and all the O2 sensors. He didn't give a quote, but ball parked it at $1200.00 Before I even think about spending over a grand on an 11 year old, second vehicle with 219k miles which I only expect to drive on rare occassions, I wanted to hear from the folks who know their Acuras. (my shop is not an Acura specific shop) I don't have the codes, but could probably call the shop and ask if that is needed to formulate responses.

I appreciate the honest feedback.

In NC it looks as if they do a safety inspection and check emissions/controls by
inserting a reader in the OBDII under the dash. If CEL is on, the vehicle won't pass.
I would recommend to use spark plug non foulers on the downstream O2 sensors.
Not legal. but will get you through.
