06 with NAV - Needs Transmission
 
As the title says, I'm sad to say my beloved White Stallion will no longer be leaving the stable - she ran a total of 186K miles. I've decided against spending $3600 to rebuild the tranny by a local guy that knows what he's doing and only does transmissions. A used with 100K miles would be $2500. How do I go about selling everything for parts? or should I just get rid of it all for a couple grand? Gimme your thoughts as if you were in this position... The only service it would need after replacing the tranny would be valve cover gaskets - the motor mounts, TB WP and all associated pulleys have been done at 145K, new dashboard 2 years ago with new struts all around. Honestly, I would drop in an AV6 transmission and call it a day. Let's say it costs you $2500, that's what? 4-6 months of new car payments? As long as the rest of the maintenance is up to date, and from the picture it looks in good condition, it would make more sense to put in a transmission.

if you're technically savvy, you may be able to part it out but you'd have to deal with manypeople who are no shows and who don't commit etc, it'll be more financially beneficial to part it out Vs selling whole but it's a lot more work as well.

One last thing, if you're going to be pulling trailers, it might be better to get another vehicle. These transmissions are already delicate, so towing puts a much greater load on them and will definitely shorten the life. Overall there's pros and cons to keeping Vs selling Vs parting out. You have to see what's financially viable and also on how much time you have.

You can get a rebulit trans and send your old one back for under 2K if you look hard enough. Labor can probably be worked out with an Indy shop near you.

@vpasla1 - I do plan on towing more (it was just that one time moving across the US from FL) now that I have a motorcycle and several tracks within hours of me.
@csmeance - I found one of the best tranny shops in the area, which is why the price is steep for sure, but at least I know his rebuild has all new quality upgraded parts, not standard OEM ones. Ultimately I think I want a Jeep...

And I'm not sure where you guys are getting these rebuild prices. I just went through this last month, which cost $2300, that was with the rear main seal changed out also. The rebuild needs to be done correctly with a shift kit installed to fix the valve body problem that causes torque converter overheat, then you are all set forever. And you need a cooler installed, if you are towing that much.

FWIW: Sounds like you've taken care of all the big stuff, already. I understand your reluctance, to go with the AV6, instead of a rebuild, but vpasla1 makes a good point. Even $ 3600.00, for a car you know well, which will easily go to 300k, with no major costs, is something to think about.. If it were my car, I would have the transmission repaired, and plan on driving it to 300K, and beyond, with no further timing belt service! Yes, I would risk a potential timing belt failure, after 245K, rather than invest any more money in the car!
