04 TL w/ 58,000 needs new Transmission

Took the 04 TL in Friday because the transmission was slipping. They verified this yesterday and I will be needing a new transmission. They have not quoted me a cost yet and I've already asked if Acura of America would help with any of the cost. The service advisor said he's not sure in my case because I am the 3rd owner of the vehicle and there is no service history on that vehicle.

Is there anything I should say to them to see if they can push Acura of America to help? I bought the car less than a year ago and I'm really dreading poouring $4000 into it for a transmission.

Eww.. sorry to hear.. I would get a 2nd opinion even with your slipping issue. Are you getting any DTC's? Ask the service writer what DTC's came up on the tranny. Between what gears is it slipping? I was sold a TL with a bad tranny. If I didn't get money for the repair from the slum dealer I bought it from I wouldn't think of investing $3.5k. It seems like the 3G tranny suffers many failures like the 2G independent of mileage and care.

There are some excellent indie shops in TX that will rebuild the transmission and do it well for a fraction of the cost. I think you'll have a tough time getting American-Honda to warrant any goodwill but it is definitely worth a shot especially with your miles.

You may want to ask if they won't pay to put a new one in.. if they will at least cover the tranny and you just pay for the labor.

Well the dealer called me back today and I almost feel like I have won the lottery. The service advisor said he spoke with Acura and they are paying 95% of the bill! I am only out $200! It's almost like Christmas again.

McDavid Acura in Plano Texas. Just from this experience alone, I will probably be an Acura customer for long long time.

lol.. I sometimes go to McDavid Acura in Austin.. They're always trying to shaft me. You're regional manager was definitely still in the Xmas spirit.

I just got my car back yesterday and the tranny feels so smooth now. I do have some worry though. I was gently revving up the engine today to about 2500 RPM and the car seems to be really rough...it doesn't seem like the engine. i dunno. Should I take it back to the dealer? They gave me a 3 yr/36000 mile warranty on the tranny.*

Yeah!! Try this.. in a stopped position.. put the car in neutral then engage in drive. Also try neutral then reverse. Is there a long lag before it goes in gear? When you press on the throttle on the highway.. is there a lag before you feel the car engage?

I suspect that the tranny is okay.. I would do a Berryman's B-12 Chemtool fuel system and intake system cleaning.. or Seafoam. Then maybe new plugs and valve adjustment.. the OE Denso last a long time but 60k is not too bad of an interval for new plugs although they can easy run +100k miles, but I would definitely take it back if the treatment doesn't help. Also check your air filter.

Can you describe any other symptoms and be specific if you can? Does your exhaust smell rich in fuel? any codes?

They're supposed to neutralize the engine, transmission and subframe mounts when they do a trans swap. If they didn't, it's very likely the problem.
