'04 TL 6 speed shuddering under accleration
2004 Acura TL 6-speed manual with 192,600 miles. Water Pump, Timing Belt & left transaxle replaced at 174,00 miles
At the end of December, I completed a 3,200 mile road trip from California to Maryland for the Army. I spent the first night in Evanston, Wyoming where the low was -20 over night. The next morning I started the car up and it started right up and I let it idle to normal operating temperature for approximately 15 minutes. I got on the road and I had the cruise control set at 75 MPH, I would hit resume on the cruise control from a speed of 60 MPH while in 6 gear and the check engine light would flash and the engine would shutter and then itd go away. Itd also do the same thing in 5th gear. I pulled off the road and checked the engine light and I got P0101-P0106 for all cylinders misfiring. Well I made it to Maryland and took it to the local acura dealership and for $1200, they replaced the valve cover gasket, adjusted the valves, oil change, brake fluid change and coolant change. However the shudder is still there. It happens in 3rd,4th,5th and 6th gear around 3,500 rpm under moderate to heavy acceleration. Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem could be? |
Do you experience the same symptoms when you accelerate as described when not using the "resume" button on cruise control?
|
Yes it does the same thing whether or not I'm using cruise control. So I know it has nothing to do with the cruise control

OBD 2 P0106 and P0101 are related to the MAP sensor circuit
Internet yielded: The most common causes of the code P0101 are: - Dirty, obstructed or faulty mass air flow sensor (MAF) - Cracked, ripped or disconnected intake boot (snorkel) - Vacuum leaks (from stuck open PCV valve, leaking intake gaskets, etc.) - Clogged up or improperly installed air filter - The mass air flow sensor element contaminated by excess oil from an oil-soaked air filter - Clogged-up catalytic converter or restricted exhaust Other possible causes include: - Dirty throttle body - Bad or dirty manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) - Electrical problems with the MAF sensor connector or wiring - Stuck open EGR valve - Incorrect valve timing - faulty engine computer (ECM) What can cause the code P0106: - clogged a cracked vacuum line to the sensor - electrical problems with the wiring, connector or the ECM power supply - faulty MAP/BARO sensor - dirty throttle body - problems with the EGR system - bad mass airflow sensor (MAF) - engine mechanical problems - blocked exhaust or catalytic converter Sounds like your dealership took you for a ride. |
Ignore MAF, the J series is a speed density system (MAP)

Sounds like the first repair I should have is to have my fuel induction system cleaned

Which dealer was it? Let us know so those of us in that area can avoid them like the plague and they can be put on the AcuraZine shit list like Paragon here in NY. . . |

That should be a lesson to avoid stealerships once you're out of warranty. :gag: :censored:

I would start with the MAP as well. Easy to DIY it's at the throttle body.

My 04TL 6MT had similar shuddering (no check engine light though). Replacing both front axles did the trick, buttery smooth now.
