*Update* Paint peel

Paint Peel? *56K beware*
Is this paint peel?
Did anyone have trouble getting the dealer to repaint the front bumper due to paint peel? Is there anyway to fix this without repainting the whole bumper?
I have a clear bra covering the whole bumper and if the dealer was to repaint the whole bumper should they also pay for a new clear bra for the front bumper?
I guess I'll wait to see if it gets worst.

Not a Blowhole
Have a good detailer determine if the peel is in the clear or the base. If the clear, it may be possible to wet sand out the high points and buff out the clear.
Personally, I would not recommend it. A little peel on the soft parts is not uncommon.

I don't think it's paint peel
Looks like I got the same thing in the front bumper. I have a clear bra on it too. When I feel it, it seem bubbly I'm going to left it alone for now....

sounds more like you have air bubbles under the clear bra.
If you take off the bra and put a new one on, you will probably notice that the paint is still good.
Check your bra warranty.

The paint peel I'm referring to is right where the headlight meets the bumper. It's not the clear bra and it's not under the clear bra.
That is not bubbles on the clear bra. Just some dirt.

looks like it. After all there is no paint there, and its not an application error. But if it is not peeling around the edges, it could have been mistakenly scraped off at one point or another.

I have the similar paint peeling over those locations, right under the headlight. I use touch-up paint.
Since I use the full nose-mask, it gets worse and worse. But, I probably won't ask for the repaint as long as those paint peeling isn't happening on the bumper surface.

I would really hate to have the whole bumper repainted.

In my case, when using touchup paint, it patches pretty well. I haven't seen any further paint peeling yet on my car.

I had some paint chipping on my bumber, where the fender meets the bumber. It was on my right front. They repaired it under warranty. Apparently, others have had the same problem. Good Luck!!!

This has been an issue from day one with the 04TL. I don't think the bumpers were prepped right at the factory. Somehow they are getting contaminated and/or wiped down with something that doesn't agree with paint adhesion etc. Reminds me of some of the issues GM had back in the 80's...

I have the same thing on my bumper. I think I'm going to live with it for a while after reading all the posts about hack job repairs at Acura dealers.

Paint adhesion problems cause paint to peel off in sheets, or at least pieces. The picture isn't that clear so I really can't say. I can tell you how I used to determine if an adhesion issue was occuring:
place a small strip of clear cellophane tape on the area & pull it off. If paint sticks to the tape, it's an adhesion issue. If it doesn't, it's not.
Asking us won't get your car repaired anyway. Get thee to your dealer & ask them!

I have my second oil change coming up soon. I'll ask them than.
If it is paint peeling problems, they would have to repaint the whole bumper right? Would Acura pay for a new clear bra for my front bumper?

No. Betterment is not usually something a manufacturer will do unless they are attempting to atone (sp?) for an issue. I'd think the best you'll get is a free paint job. And yes, chances are the front bumper will be completely repainted.

I already have the clear bra on my front bumper though. They would need to remove it to repaint the bumper. Shouldn't they pay for a replacement clear bra also?
Thanks for the replies.
The only way to see what can be done is to speak to the dealer directly.

It's not really that big of a deal to me....I had the same thing happen with my old Honda. Same thing is happening on my TL. It seems like body panels that fit so closely together tend to have these problems. I have the slight peel below my headlights and between the bumper/fender. My dealer told me that if I couldn't live with it, they'd fix it...but I'll wait until I need something else. Don't want to be without the car for something so insignificant. It isn't spreading...

Be careful if you use a power washer.......

After painting cars for numerous years I can say this is not something that "tends to happen" with tight body panels. This is definitely a paint adhesion problem and will most likely get worse if left to the elements. Tight body panels may tend to chafe or rub the paint, but the paint doesn't continue to "flake" away past the seem etc. I agree, I would hate to have my bumpers repainted, but if mine remotely were doing what 6mtV6's (and others) are doing, it would be at the body shop and Acura would be providing me with a loaner.
Their is a reason why we haven't heard of anyone being refused a repaint regarding this issue,,, - Acura knows they have some issues with their paint process.. The good thing is they are taking care of it by authorizing dealerships to repaint etc.

Your "match" concern is valid though. Is your paint Blue or Black? Can't really tell from the photo etc.. Either way, both should repaint nicely and are the least likely colors to reflect poor matches. I know thats easy for me to say Sometimes I wish I had a "bad" paint issue like yours with my WDP. That way I would have an excuse to attempt a better match than the factory bumpers.....
Best of luck

Smitty- I agree with you. Mine has not spread past the point where the two panels meet. If it did, I'd be in there in a heartbeat.

i just noticed on mine that there are like two whole strips of paint that came off - like a sticker. it's not even like paint nicks, the stuff is coming off like tape. and it isn't at a point where it's meeting the light or anything - it is in the middle of the damn bumper. they're about an inch long each and it isn't from someone hitting me - there isn't any dent damage or anything. has this ever happened to anyone?

*Update* Paint peel
I went to the dealer today for an oil change and also asked them about the paint peel on my front bumper, right where the headlight meets the bumper.
First thing the SA asked was if I got into an accident before. I told him no and said that a few people that I know has the same problem.
He than suggested that they will repaint the whole bumper for me. He noticed the clear bra and asked if the clear bra can be taken off and put back on again. I told him no. Once you take it off you need to put a new one on. He than suggested that I should fix it by myself with touch-up paint.
We went back into the service building. I asked him if they will pay for a new clear bra. He said no. Didn't even ask the manager or Acura.
When he suggested that I fix it myself with touch-up paint, he didn't even offer a free bottle of touch-up paint for me. He didn't even offer to have the body shop do it for me. Just told me that I can fix it myself with touch-up paint.
What should I do now? Should I contact ACS? What would you do now?

i don't know, i did have someone bump my front bumper but that has nothing to do with the way the paint is peeling off in strips. I've been to busy/lazy to go to the dealer, but if they bust my balls like that I am going to go ballistic.
where in NY are you? I know customer service really varies from place to place over here - check another dealer before contacting acura.

I called ACS and they wont do it either. They will repaint the bumper but will not pay for a new clear bra. They told me that it's considered an aftermarket part.
I put the clear bra on to protect the bumper and how was I supposed to know that my front bumper paint was gonna start peeling off. I would expect a new car's bumper paint to be on the bumper.
My TL is not even a year old yet.
Maybe I should write them a letter, send them a email, or report to BBB?
