Three words Folks... K & N!!!

Alright folks... I just subscribed to this board yesterday...
I have been viewing some of the posts and threads for a while now...
You all seem to be pretty knowledgeable in all things TL and automotive...
I hope we can both prosper from this relationship...

Enough of that and on to my car.
2004 TL Black on Black (purchased Nov. 2003)
6 speed manual (the only way to get it - IMHO)

The only mod thus far other than the removal of comestic badging in the back....
K & N TYPHOON COLD AIR INTAKE... (Best thing is that it was free - loaned vehicle to K&N for test fitting of production model - they in turn gave me and installed a polished kit - SWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEET)
How happy am I...

Following are some thumbnails of the engine bay and one standard shot of my baby...
(Thumbnails are clickable to bigger shots - should you desire)

Cool for now...
I have to go...
Cyall...

Performance...

Well, unfortunately they did not get a chance to dyno my car before I picked it up in Riverside CA...

The baseline runs without it (the kit) put out 238 bhp to the front wheels in third gear. (stock)
I was told though that I could expect between 6 - 12 bhp increase.

Now, their website states the typhoon kit (which is now in normal production) puts out 6.8 hp at 5501 rpm... (so who knows)

But I can tell you my seat of my pants feeling... - WOW - HOLY CRAP...

This thing (my TL) is much quicker. In my opinion and in a very unscientific way of timing it my 0-60 time is well below 6 seconds and probably close to 5 1/2 seconds...

I will tell you what impresses me most about the kit... is the responsiveness of the throttle, throughout the powerband.

The bonus is that it puts out a sweet little growl at anything above 3500...

I see this as the first installment with at least a few more to come, to make my beauty a true sleeper... (header, exhaust, chip, maybe even supercharger...)

I will go with very few cosmetic changes...

You must have a calibrated seat of the pants then.
I wouldn't think that a 2.5% increase in hp would be that noticeable. Maybe it is just pyshcosematic???

Weird that it comes with that unused port at the front - the one that is plugged. Any part throttle whistle? Have you played with it in short ram configuration?

Yeah man, I don't know what's up with that port...

I have not done anything with short ram...

No throttle whistle. but lots of that wonderfull sucking/wooshing sound when I step on the gas.

You think it helps you when shifting? The car is so damn quiet, I have to constantly look at the tachometer to see where I am shifting when I drive "enthusiastically."

Thanks bud I love it...

I would expect they would be comparable to other CAIs ($200 - $500)...

No more than $400 or $500 installed I would think...

I looked on the K&N website (I couldn't find a price)

But I did find more pictures of my car which they took when it was there...

Short Ram Config.
Bag over filter charge in full install...

Hmmm, so this unit does not get lower in the engine compartment than the OEM filter it seems. Thus it would seem to be not a problem with water intake and the dreaded hydrolock engine killer
syndrome. This could be a CAI I would be interested in. Wonder what the seat of the pants would say in the 5AT configuration.

That picture (I assume it's you) is freakin scary. It would be nice if you removed it. Otherwise, I will no longer read your posts. Sorry, but I would just rather not look at that face everytime I you are involved in a thread.

It is a Typhoon kit from K&N (the one they have been making for years now)
I don't quite know what you mean "cheesy" are you thinking of some other like-named product???

I have had it for a little less than a month and I drive my car hard (lots of city driving) - so it's hard to say about the gas mileage... + I am originally from France ( here come the flames) and for me I'm used to seeing gas prices between $5-$7 a gallon...) $2.50/gl please...

My apologies EMF213 but I joined this board a week ago and that is all that I had for my AVATAR...

So I might change it later...

BTW it was meant to scare...

Thanks for the input...

I think he means this product.
http://www.myauto.tv/asseen/?PHPSESS...48d329d7ccb940

But its called the Tornado, not the Typhoon. But then again, you cant expect someone to remember all the details when they are watching infomercials at 3am

Peoples avatars make them stand out - as in if I just want to scroll through the post to see what that person is saying, it makes it much easier

$400 - $500 for an intake? Ouch.

That price is a complete guess on my part... plus it was my guess for installed price...

I have never aftermarked my vehicles before this one and so my numbers might be a little skewed...

Sorry for the scare... (price or avatar - hehe )

Can you comment on the procedure of converting it from CAI to the short ram configuration? Do you need to take off the bumper, can it be done from the wheelwell or the engine bay? Thanks.

Those short ram pics you see were taken from the K&N site itself...
It is my car in the pics, but I was not there when they did this...
From what the K&N guy mentioned to me when I picked up my car from them was that the short ram config was "easy" (coming from mechanics and engineers - uuuuhhhhmmm) anyway they said they did not have to remove the fender, I don't know about the bumper.

So in other words it is my understanding that someone with a modicum of mechanical knowledge would be able to go from Full to short Ram config...

I hope that helps...

Do you mean the Tornado? A typhoon is an Asian term for a hurricane.

Is an ampersand a word? Don't think so - so 2 words iot is.

The short ram look like it is not a CAI product at all - it sits high in the engine bay, where hot gases accumulate, esp at idle.

I'd like to see an independent dyno done with verified, identical operating conditions, espcially ECT - hondas are greatly affected by coolant temps. Then there is the filtering ability of K&N's - but that is already been on the table for a while.
