Straight2Black Photography presents....updated 8/9/12
Hey Azine I decided that instead of making whole new threads everytime I do a photoshoot of a member's car or cars in general I post them in one spot for all of you to comment, criticize, or state your opinion. I am always open to knowing how I can improve my shots and I thank you ahead of time for your feedback. Also if anyone would like a photoshoot done let me know via pm as I am in the NJ area. Thanks again and enjoy:

These photos would look 100000x better had you not added the blur effects. Looks like you're using a Canon 60D, which is a very capable camera. If you want to add natural DOF (depth of field) to your photos, use a long focal length with a zoom lens and/or a large aperture (small f-number). Your 18-55mm kit lens (I assume that's what you're shooting with) is a good all-around lens, but for automotive photography, a decent zoom lens with a f/2.8 max aperture is great to have. Even if you're on a budget, Canon makes several versions of a cheaper 70-300mm f/4-5.6 which are very nice too.
Once you can produce the look you're going for straight out of the camera, you'll be much more satisfied with the results.

Thanks guys for the criticism as i am trying to improve so i appreciate it and in terms of lens i have a 18 to 200mm f2.8 lens i was using ...i agree in terms of setting up the dof i didnt need to really add the blur but i did because i wanted to put more focus on the cars and not the target in the background....but thanks ill keep all ths in mind going forward

Very effective at making things look miniature.
You can do tilt shift by getting tilt shift lens or using Photoshop to create the effect.
I agree with a lot of people - the pictures look fuzzy wuzzy.
If they were more focused, it would add so much more to the tilt-shift.
Google it if you're interested =)

Okay, back on topic....yes, get an EXIF reader/plugin and you can see a lot of info about an image.

It's called tilt-shift photography.

If you notice, you get the tilt-shift effect when areas of the background AND foreground are blurred....which is what you did above. If you want to avoid this creating the toy car effect, try to limit your blurring to the background only. Realistically, if you're taking automotive shots, the only thing in the foreground should be the vehicle, so there should be no reason to blur the foreground. Blurring the background in some instances does make sense though. But like I mentioned, get out there and take some shots around 100-200mm and you'll get the look you want right out of the camera without having to add it with PS.
Example:
Shot at 145mm at f/2.8, no editing other than resize.
Also, google the term, "bokeh".

Not saying the camera (or more importantly the lens) isn't what's important, because it totally is. But almost all photographs that get the "ooooo's" and "ahhhh's" of the crowd all use heavy post processing.
Lightroom is am AMAZiNG product by the way, if you can get your hands on it.
Otherwise, good work Jarrod

Good advice. However, I strongly disagree that the look that you go for in a picture comes straight out of a camera. A lot of it is in post processing.

Photos came out great for handheld. I would suggest getting a tripod if you don't have one. Tripod is key for night photography if your shooting with long exposure. And shoot with aperture around 5.6-11 for sharper photos. Set iso to 100 for least amount of noise. And shutter depends on amount of light around you.
If you want bokehlicious get 35mm or 50mm. The 50mm 1.8 you can get around 100 which is a great price for what it can do.

Yeah, obviously that's a case-by-case situation. You're never going to get exactly what you want from step 1 every time. I also agree with you...there are a lot of photographers whose claim-to-fame is their ability to edit the hell out of their photos in a specific style that's appealing to a lot of people (the Dragan effect is one of my favs). For the OP though, he wants all the focus to be on the cars with a blurred background, which is pretty simple to accomplish right out of the camera and looks a lot better than a doctored photo with fake blur.
