Plastidipped my car Carbon Blue

It was a long tedious process, and real messy. Bought a tent and had so much wind blowing around.

That doesn't look shabby at all color wise. How does it look close up or in person?

Looks great . Back in the day when I had my 3G I plastidipped it black. Really liked it but ended up stripping it off eventually. I found the plastidip would easily "chip", especially on the front. It would easily scrape off in cases where otherwise a slight buffing would remove the scratch from paint. Normally that wouldn't have been a problem but it turned out to be the dealbreaker. I was never able to figure out how to touch up without the mark still being obvious. If I sprayed it, there would still be an indentation. If I tried to touch up with a brush it would turn out smooth which didn't match the rougher texture of the rest of the car. As you can see from the 3rd picture down, it just never looked right.

If you can find a way to touch up scratches a chips then you'll be golden. Unfortunately, I was never successful at it.

oo interesting, yea plastidip always has the rubber feel. but i believe since i used a clear top coat it should hold up a little better.

Oh wow, that actually looks pretty damn good. Rattle cans?

You need to change your name to CarbonBlueTL now.

Not a huge fan of the dip any more but that blue looks pretty legit.

What are the dotted lines above your tailpipes?

I think it looks great but I don't understand the point of spending money on something you know won't last long.

I'm not sure how much DesertMist paid, but it's really not that expensive. I think I paid a total of around $150 for the plastidip and around $50 for xylene. I purchased the cans then diluted it with xylene. Xylene works great to dilute and remove plastidip without ruining the clear coat. You just have to have good ventilation

The worst part for me was removal. I'd guess I spent a total of 6 hours or so over three days removing it. A lot of it came off in sheets. But the little turds that hung on took a lot longer. Using xylene is useful for small bits, but for larger stubborn swaths, it's not really practical because you'd use a lot of it and rags become saturated pretty quickly with plastidip, requiring a lot of rags to do.

It's a reversible way of modding your car. Why do any of us spend any money changing anything on a car? It's a waste of money and generally comes with some sort of compromise... but we do it anyway. Because we love it.

plus, a proper paint job like that would cost easily in excess of 5k, all the way up to 10k, if everything was done properly. OP probably paid $500 for the gun and dip, at the most.

correct

i spent $550 for paint, gun and tape

i saved $200 because i got the gun used from a friend.

i chose this route because it is reversible and a $500 real paint job would chip and look horrible after a year anyways.

I loved my color but the car was repainted after an accident from original owner and the quarter panel paint was starting to spiderweb and chip, the top of my trunk completely flaked off--why its vinyl wrapped black. I also had some defects here and there that I wanted to cover.

had a chance to wash her for the first time and apply a top coat/wax

Looks really good, really like the color!

Any chance you could post a few pictures from straight on in the back of the LEDs you have above the exhaust? TIA.

How hard was it to spray? Like... what is the quality Like? Do you have any runs, or wrinkles, or inconsistencies in the dip, after it was applied?

pretty easy to spray, just got to spray close to get coverage and keep moving. one hesitation and you'll run. but good thing with dip is runs usually flatten out and more coats covers them.

i have some inconsistency from spraying too far or too fast. on my 2nd dip i should have it perfect.
