My TL is never "clean" as yours [Rust Galore]
Well, about time I made this thread.
Let me tell you this first:
I bought my car privately knowing there were cosmetic, but were fixed and repainted. Not to mention I bought it for a GREAT deal...
I know you guys probably think wow, GP has a clean TL.
Well, take a look at the rust:
On the hood:
Many rock chips, covered by touchup paint globs and a rust spot:
Open up the hood and this is what you see:
Now, onto the rear passenger quarter panel.
Driver's rear passenger side is FLAWLESS!!!
Just recently started seeing this above the passenger tail light.
Now lets look at the engine bay:
Wiper arm even has rust...
Alright, so that's pretty much it.
To some it up, there's rust:
On the front of the hood
Rear Passenger Quarter Panel
Above Passenger Tail Light
On wiper arm
So you guys are probably like "GP16! Set your priorities straight man!!!!"
Well, one of the last mods is gonna be tint, which I have scheduled on Sunday.
Then I still need my shark fin painted, and maybe a decklid spoiler in the future. Oh, my new interior LED boards come in next week too.
But no, you won't be seeing me with new rims, new coilovers, new sound system, etc.
Soon, my TL will just be an A-Spec TL just like the others, so you won't see any "progress" updates from me.
Cheers.

And the worst part is, I don't know how the rust forms!!!!
It formed SO quick. I only bought my car in April 2010.
No rust...
What's on the hood:
Nothing.
August 2010:
What's on the rear quarter panel and on top of the tail light?
Nothing.
Something just tells me the guy who had the car before fixed up damages, but didn't do it properly or seal it up or remove the rust underneath and just painted over.
Then when winter passed by, the rust started to show.
That's one thing I noticed, the rust gets worst over the winter season, but kinda halts during the summer season.

I took auto body class so I know the process and have done it on older cars.

^^^bi-weekly? I wash my Accord every weekend during winter months I spend around $7 washing carefully especially any connection line between bumper and body panel, side skirt and door.
Yes they do lay down salt and sand on the road during winter months many of you owner living in warm state won't see it. BTW in some state they lay down this sticky liquid like sugar sticky, once they stick to your car it will be hard to get it off and that why I spend about 10 mins at the car wash.

I'd get rid of it dude. That's some very severe rust issues for a fairly new car. And the fact that it's not in one particular area too is scary. Will Acura cover some of that?

Doubtful they'll cover it he bought it privately not from the dealer. It'll be considered normal wear plus not to mention they'll blame it on environmental conditions. Who knows though maybe he might be able to get it covered under good faith I dunno. Good luck though GP!

Probably got in an accident, rusted, wasn't repaired properly, rust came back.

On the plus side, I have enough bodyshop experience to remove the rust and bondo.
I was thinking maybe I could just do the rust removal work myself, and get a body shop to do the paint work.

If I was in you shoes I would probably unbolt everything from the exterior that CAN be unbolted (headlights, tail lights, side markers, front fenders, splash shields, rear license plate bucket and bumpers) to see how bad the rust really is. Then get under it and have a look at the frame to see if that is rusting. Hopefully it's not. The stuff under the hood doesn't look bad, and borderline normal. I think this is just a case of some half assed pre-sale touch-ups.
Like I said though....you need to nip it in the bud now before it gets terribly worse. Oh, and as far as the hood goes, just buy a new one and get it painted. It'll cost more to fix it.

My rear passenger caliper froze and they charged me $720 for 1 new caliper, 2 rear brake pads, and the rest labour.
I don't want to think about trading it in.
I have spent countless hours and thousands of dollars (not only on mods, but misc replacement parts and detailing stuff) into it
Definitely an underlying problem when I bought the car, and not from the winter. Not saying the winter had no effect, though.
Yeah, well, now you guys know.
My car. It's the worst TL I've seen on here.
Except for the pictures of the ones that caught fire and rusted up.
Those cars are bad.
That is exactly what it is. BUT, you don't have holes yet, so you might be able to grind down the rust that is there on the wheel arch, which is probably the most important part because it's part of the unibody, unlike a fender that you can just unbolt and replace. If that rusts through, then you're cutting out sections of car and welding in patch panels.

I'll have to get it up on the lift or hoist again, but the mufflers and stuff don't look too bad. Now the metal cat covers are rusty.
Oh, and suspension components are rusty, but I thought that was normal.
I agree with you that it looks like most of it can be grinded off, which is what I plan on doing myself when it gets nicer out.
Despite the rusty areas, she's still my baby and I will continue to hand wash her daily and keep her pristine as I can.
I just hope she does her job of keeping herself pristine...

The screwed up thing is all the cars I see on AZ and in Canada that have like 100k+ miles are still in GOOD condition and no rust.
My 04 TL with 90k miles isn't...
As pointed out, it has to be that the car was damaged before and rusted, and covered up without fully removing the rust.
And yes! The rustproofing here is mostly done by "Krown".

Problem is, my Acura dealer (closest one) is 50 minutes away.
I don't have any relationship with them so I doubt they will try anything for me.
All my electronics function great!
Thanks for the support.

you should paint that sharksfin antenna a rust color.
sorry man, had to...
sorry to see this. I would get it fixed ASAP if you plan on keeping the car for a while. it'll only get worse over time, as you know.

You're right. I plan on driving it til it dies.
Actions WILL have to be taken this summer.
After that, that will probably mark the end of my modding days and I start laying low.
Really nothing left to do to the car after the tint and maybe the decklid spoiler.
Anything done to it is just cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. Keeping it prestine.

Try 2 and a half hours for me per wash using double bucket method with grit guard, brushes for detail, condition and brush dust off leather, and a proper small/low speed buff for wax.

Ouch. The fact you mention such acceleration in growth and expansion not only makes me curious about previous damages but also the condition of the body metals and paint work. I mean, if it's that aggressive, there has to be a greater underlying issue.
